I have a Box Turtle that lives in a "natural" setup in a 55g aquarium. There is a large, driftwood log for "shelter, the ground is soil. There are two barking tree frogs and three fire belly toads in the enclosure. There are earthworms and crickets. The grass is starting to die a bit, but I will be adding more soon. There is also moss and we're working on adding a few brushy plants, soon.
Is it normal for him to sit in his water bowl constantly? He just now started doing it, and it worries me a bit. It's only an inch deep, when full.
I have quite a few box turtles so I may be able to give you some advice. I have my turtles in an outside area that is fenced. whenever my turtles sit and soak in the pool it was usually because of hot wheather. Box turtles shell's get dried out really fast, so your turtle could just be trying to stay hydrated. You probaly know this but being a "land turle" doesnt mean they can't be in water that's deeper than they are. I have a pool that's a couple of feet deep and my turtles get in and swim around all the time. They don't go under the water surface, of course, but they enjoy splashing around in it. None of my pregnant turtles did this but a couple books that I read say that pregnant turtles like to spend all day soaking in a shallow pool. Is your turtle a female? I wouldn't worry about your turtle constantly soaking in his dish, my turtles do that all the time. The most likely reason is the wheather is hot or the ground and plants are really dry.
