I found a frog under a table in my living room today that my cat had brought in to play with. I don't know how long it had been there, but when I picked it up, it was obviously injured. It is just a regular pond type frog from my backyard. I have put in in a small aquarium but it appears that its back legs don't work and there is a small, clear balloon type something coming out its anal region. The front legs seem to work. It has been alive for about 8 hours now, but I have no idea what to do with or about it. I don't want it to be in pain, but I can't stand the thought of killing it myself. I have no idea what to feed it or how to care for it if it lives but its' back legs are paralized. Any suggestions? I cannot afford to take it to a vet. Thank you. oldpita

You may not want to hear this, but your frog is in severe pain. Blocking of the cloaca is painful and can result in much bigger problems. Not using the back legs is also a big problem, and unless you get them fixed, he can't be release back into the wild. If you have a knowledgable reptile/amphibian friend, you might want to ask them to help you out. Going to a reptile expo in your town may help you out, because you can ask breeders there what to do. Right now I'm pretty much at a loss, but I do know that if you don't do something, your frog is going to die slowly.

the best advice i can give you is to either find some one to look at it for free or take it to a cheap vet that specializes in reptiles. the only other options would be find a way to kill it quickly or watch it die slowly and painfully Frown

Your frog is experiencing some prolapse of the cloaca (vent),which is often caused when the reptile or amphibian is straining. He/She is in pain, and will need to have their cloaca opened somehow in order to let bowel movements take place. He's going to need some work done, and the only thing I can recommend is to take to a humane society immediately for some advice. You're in a tough spot right now.

Dear friend,
i do not know much about frogs, but i do not think you should kill it yet. give the animal a chance, and call your humane society. i think you should take it to a vet, just to se what is the problem. Frown i am so sorry for you and i know u r discouraged. just keep trying and hope for the best. if it dies, at least it will die in the hands of some one who cares, not alone to be tortured by a larger animal. i think you did the right thing.
over and out
