What does it take for a myth be put on Mythbusters?
It has to be something the production team sees value in. If there's little point in doing a segment on it, it kind of defeats the purpose of being suggested as a "show idea".
Having said that, several myths on the show have come from message boards like this.
But, look around...
If you want to catch the researchers' eyes as they try to slog through the boards, you have to work with them. A thread titled "new myth" or "hey!" or "best idea ever" is more likely to just be bypassed.
The more information about the myth that is in the first post, the better. This includes references (although something other than Wikipedia is preferred for a source) for both the myth and any science behind it. Including possible testing methods goes a long way too.
The researchers just aren't going to keep checking back and see if something's been fleshed out... if someone comes up with decent sources and/or decent testing, but it's not until page 8, and the other 7 pages have been mostly irrelevant bickering, the researchers aren't likely to see it because they probably gave up on the thread ages ago.
And even if you do post something that catches their eye, that doesn't guarantee that it will make it to production and it doesn't guarantee that the idea came from you -- one good example was POAT -- the staff was considering the idea before it ever got posted here.
But yes, show ideas from fan message boards have made it to the show, but don't expect to get your name in the credits, and if you're not willing to "sell" your idea to the research team, don't really count on it being seen or considered.
Or, at least that's what the moderators and researchers used to say... perhaps DCFM has more current information from the production team.
