In what countries does the show appear in? I saw one episode on youtube that was narrated by a guy with a British accent. I think that there are cultural myths that would make an episode from one country or another fun to watch.

Is the show a hit in the UK? By the way, is there an excess of clowning around because the British like to see yanks fall all over themselves?

Seeing how the Brazilians love to see Americans shovel themselves out of snow, the Alaska special would go over well if it was dubbed into Portuguese.

Discovery Channel broadcasts in some 170 countries and 33 different languages. So I'd assume that Mythbusters, as one of the Discoveries flagship programs, is shown in all of them.

The situation in the UK is complicated, as not only is the show aired on Discovery Channel, but also on BBC2.

For some unexplained reason the UK version was given a new voice over for most, but not all, of its episodes. Other countries seem to either stick to the American voice over with subtitles, or to redo the narration into the local language.

I'm unclear if Mythbusters is a 'hit' in the UK - although the fact that the BBC is willing to show it would indicate that it has a reasonable following. That they only show it on BBC2 tells me that the following isn't huge.

No, the British don't have any particular desire to see American's fall over. Or at least no more than people from anywhere else.
We do enjoy seeing examples of Americans being astonishingly moronic. It gives us a warm glow inside to think that maybe we were correct to leave the North American Colonies to themselves... Wink

Being a kind hearted man, I like to entertain Brits with Southern amorphisms like 'happy as a dead pig in the sunshine'. They always seem to enjoy them.

Oh yes; aphorisms, similes, euphemisms, metaphors, and the like are quite popular here in the UK.

As an aside, you could probably get quite a healthy thread from something as seemingly simple as alternative descriptions for people who are not, shall we say, overly blessed in the looks department:

Face like a bulldog chewing a wasp
Face like a fire damaged Lego brick
Face like a stuntman's knee
Face like a welder's bench
Face like a bag of spanners

...just to start.

Not that these examples are particularly, or if at all, in some cases, British, it's just that this kind of thing is quite popular. The tabloids in particular are notorious for, given even the slightest opportunity, trying to shoehorn headlines into popular aphorisms, euphemisms and so on.

I wouldn`t have said that Mythbusters had been that great a Hit on BBC2, if I remember correctly, they only showed episode from season 1 or 2 heavily edited down to a 30 minute run time. I don`t belive that the BBC purchased any more seasons, so the new ones are only avaiable on Discovery. These are narrated by Robin Banks, the BBC version had it`s own narrator Rufus Hound. (when Disco tried to show some Robert lee narrated episodes here in the UK, the reaction wasn`t that positive on the UK Boards)

Rather than being a Hit, I`d say it was a Niche program. I`d agree with cyber, about our desire to see you guys mucking things up.

As for aphorismswell how about those for someone who`s a bit crazy

One Sandwich short of a Picnic
One Brick sort of a load
One Beer short of a Six pack
The lift doesn`t go to the Top Floor
The lights are on Nobody`s Home
Not the sharpest Knife in the draw
etc.etc.

we as Nimrod Gently says love making themu up.

Hi, guys.
I'm writing from Bulgaria. I watch "Mythbusters" on Bulgarian version of Discovery. Here it's shown with subtitles, not with Bulgarian voices.

From what I can tell subtitles seem to be preferred over dubbing - at least for shows like MB. I'd imagine that this is a question of time and money - its cheaper and faster to have someone do subtitles than to have them dub voices. Especially for shows like MB that are not available in large blocks.
