Oh yes; aphorisms, similes, euphemisms, metaphors, and the like are quite popular here in the UK.
As an aside, you could probably get quite a healthy thread from something as seemingly simple as alternative descriptions for people who are not, shall we say, overly blessed in the looks department:
Face like a bulldog chewing a wasp
Face like a fire damaged Lego brick
Face like a stuntman's knee
Face like a welder's bench
Face like a bag of spanners
...just to start.
Not that these examples are particularly, or if at all, in some cases, British, it's just that this kind of thing is quite popular. The tabloids in particular are notorious for, given even the slightest opportunity, trying to shoehorn headlines into popular aphorisms, euphemisms and so on.
