I thought this was about the future astronauts having to live in outer space for two years while they travel from earth to Mars and then back to earth again. If bordom is one of the problems our astronauts are going to face, as well as psychological breakdown, why don't we do what they did in the movie 2001 Space Odyssey--to put them to sleep in a protective shell (that will shield them from the cosmic rays) until they reach Mars?
In two years we as humanity can be closer to traveling to Mars, or so well known as the red planet. As I am watching this show for he second time, I felt it was a good idea to write my response. I like the idea for sleeping in the long journey to Mars, but do we have enough physical evidence about cryostat sleep? As far as If their was some bad news for one of the members of the mars mission, I do believe that; any or all bad news will be refrain from the knowledge till there return to earth. I say this be cause I have seen the mental as spec from a military deployment. There are more questions that I would like to answer in my own oppion, but for humanity to make it good start out in to the red planet. Then we would need to globally unit human kind. And all work together, with one of my favorite quotes to "Keep Moving Forward", its the way of the future so I believe.
When you don't use your bones or muscles you lose them.
I remember reading in Jerry Linenger's book, "Off the Planet" that when he came back to Earth after 6 months on MIR, he could just barley walk off of the shuttle. I don't remember the numbers, but he lost a lot of strength and bone mass. And THAT's being awake and exercising.
Unless they figure out a way to stimulate bone/muscle growth while you're sleeping, I don't think sleeping for a year is an option. You wouldn't be able to do much when you got to Mars.
