The subjects of heights and widths has come up several times already in this spectacular fourth season of Dirty Jobs.
Mike chilling out on a tiny I-beam floating 27 stories over Manhattan: very high, not so wide, no problem.
Mike changing his socks on a aerial tram car support tower at 8500 feet above sea level and nearly 300 feet off the ground: very high, not so wide, no problem.
Mike on his belly scraping mold, rat carcasses, and rotten fiberglass insulation from under a house in a crawl space that has 18 inches of vertical clearance: not high at all, infinitely wide, major problems.
That was more my initial interpretation Anne. Still being claustrophobic myself, the more I think about it the more Tazmas view makes since too. Wow I made a rhyme!
Having a love/hate with heights, I had a different interpretation, when he said it.
He wasn't so concerned about how high he was, but the width of the surface supprting him. The wider the surface, the more secure you'd feel.
Anne
I've wondered about his "It's not the heights, it's the width" remark everytime he's made it. I have absolutely no clue what he actually means. It makes no sense to me and it's starting to annoy me. However, I think you may be on to something.
Mike, Please explain this ...It's starting to drive me crazy!...well crazier then..hehehe!!
Bubbles, please take care while your up so high in the air!!...you're much better all in ONE piece.
I'm with Lisa and Anne. I think its small footing in high places. And I wouldn't put it past Mike to mean wits, lol. However, I'd have to watch again to actually see him pronounce it.
I have asked this many times and he's never answered. Even asked if he meant wits. I thought it was a joke I wasn't getting. I hope he answers. Susan I just don't get it How can you be afraid of widths?

It means he's afraid of tight quarters. I know he posted something about the time he got stuck in the crevice in the cave epi. I'll have to look for it.

Yup, interpretation is a funny thing. I've seen people so adamant about believing in something because they want it to be true. Only to turn around some months later and have a different interpretation and change their mind with a bit of bitterness left behind.
I applaud you guys for thinking in linear terms. High places vs. tight spaces but that's not the way I'd call that joke. It's an old bit, a guy joke even.
Everyone is trying to be on their best behavior and dance around the true meaning and that's probably best. Mike's the only one who can really give an answer and if he's smart it's sure as heck not the one I'm thinking. LOL

Ok Mickey I still don't get it. If it's a guy joke can you explain it nicely. Pretty please. This has been driving me nuts for a while. Thanks Susan And thanks to everyone who has interpreted it for me already.
I think what Mike means is that its not the height that bothers him, it is how wide what he is standing on is. If he is standing on a building, ok. but if hes standing on a 6 inch wide beam, well thats scary.
