or Peter Whattheheckhisnameis. (If you can not pronounce it, like me)
First there was a WARNING : This episode contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing. (I find the WHOLE thing disturbing!!)
Dirty Jobs in Poland: Taxidermy Chimney sweeping on the rooftops of Warsaw Coal mining
Peter speaks very slowly and sounds as though he is reading from a script. I expect he is. I don’t think he is as eloquent as Mike and definitely does not having the comic timing. Mike can convey a whole conversation/joke with just one look. Maybe it is because English is not Peter's mother tongue.
Mike,
I am so very sorry that this person has a show with the same name as your show. It is terrible. I have only watched about 13 minutes and I already want to change the channel. Do they really think that this is an acceptable alternative to Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe?
Is there somebody that I can e-mail (or write) to complain?
I understand that the show is not about the entertainment value of the host, but more about honoring the people doing the jobs. How will people learn about the dirty jobs and the people the show is honoring if nobody wants to watch?
I am not being unduly harsh. This is one show that I will definitely NOT be watching next week.
Karen (WE WANT MIKE…WE WANT MIKE…. The sound of the whole South Africa chanting in unison)
What a pity since the real original DJ has already been shown in so many countries.
I guess people want to see jobs near their home profiled, but much of the world already knows Mike. Would it be possible to find anyone remotely like him?
Karen, apparently his last name is pronounced "Shmichael" as in...well, you get the idea.
Couldn't they have found someone whose name wasn't so obviously a play on Mike's name??
I watched the pig mating clip on YouTube, very disturbing. When Mike was inseminating the pig it was funny, and informative. With this Peter guy it was just gross and crude.
Nothing (or should I say no ONE) can replace the original.
Thanks for sympathy. The impact of the blow was minimized by the glass of red wine I drank in preparation. Not permanent psychological damage was inflicted.
Kathy, I think Mike is one of a kind. I have a new respect for the comfortable way he interacts with people.
Love ya too! Karen (I forgot to end my previous post with Love, Karen)
What I noticed in the clip I saw with Peter Needsaneasynamelikerowe was that he didn't seem sincere. Mike is always willing to jump in and do the job...because he knows if someone actually does said job for a living, then it's worth giving it a try. Peter seems to be overly squeemish about doing the job. Almost as if it is 'beneath' him.
Just my thoughts from the clip I saw. Maybe he'll get better with time.
Din0 I must give him credit, he did try everything that was expected of him but yeah he is a little squeamish. I can't imagine him ever sticking his finger in his mouth to taste what he just touched!
I don't know if it will ever get better. I am going to miss my regular date with Mike every Friday at 8pm. Thank goodness for dvds.
That really s*cks Karen. I don't know what I will do when new episodes of DJ w/ MR end.
You would think I would develop some strange tick from watching Mike IN the poo, or biting at...never mind. Instead it will be because of my withdrawal.
as i mentioned on a previous topic i have only seen you tube clips . as i was huge fan of peter Schmeichel when he played for my beloved manchester united . i would love to be able to say he did well here but sadly i can;t . i agree with everything thats been said thus far . he is trying to be a second degree mike rowe and it is not coming off .
i am trying to think if he norally speaks with a slow voice as english is not his first language 9 he is originally fomr denmark but spent most of his playing career in england ) but i can;t recall .
by the way his name is pronoced sh-my-kel
kzang is right . the american show can be shown in other countries . it was shown on discovery uk in the uk at the end of 2005 ( well season one was !)
hey karen i am irish . if you have an american friend or 2 as womabt said ask them to order you the season 1 and 2 box sets they are well worth the investment .with the dollar so weak it won;t cost you as much as you think it might . i have done the same and it worked a treat .
It was not exactly speaking VERY slowly. Do you remember when you were in first grade and started to learn how to read? When you read you got into this up-and-down rhythm. This is the best description that I can give.
I don't watch soccer, an am sure that he is a good player. I just think that he is out of his element here.
I have already ordered my DJ dvds from Amazon. Our currency is much weaker than the $($1 = +/- R7-85) but I still feel that the expense is worth it.
<cringes in horrified sympathy> Oh my. Well, everyone from the dirty boy himself on down has said that a DJ spinoff will crash and burn without a strong host. I suppose a soccer star isn't a bad idea in itself, provided he's got the gift of gab, a brain in his head, and an iron stomach, a good heart and a self-deprecating sense of humor. Hmm, that's kind of a tall order, isn't it? I feel kind of sorry for Peter so-not-my-Michael. I wonder if he's even seen DJ, or if he just got tossed into this by his handlers?
From what I've seen he did not only see Dirty Jobs, he made an in depth study of it. And promptly tried to copy Mike.
I think it would have been better if he took a totally different route and remained true to who he is. Now he just looks like a watered down version of Mike.
i understand youe meaning . thats sad really the best thing about american dorty jobs is that mike can reaact naturally . i thought opeter shmichels lack of tv experience may trip him up and it seems like it has . ike had done shows like evneiong magazine where dirty jobs was trialled under thre name somebodies got to do it . peter schmichel had little tv experience in england and nothing like what he is trying to do now . i agree with you he is a man out of his element .
i know what you mean about the exchangre rate being a bit of a pain too but i can tell you the dirty jobs dvd's are worth it .
It kills me to hear that, but thanks for your honesty, and your sympathy. The implied association between myself and the European version of Dirty Jobs is undeniable, and frankly, more than a little awkward. As a producer on the domestic version, I now find myself in the bizarre position of trying to disassociate myself from my the very concept I brought to the network. Strange days. There is very little I can tell you about Dirty Jobs with Peter Schmeichel because there is very little I've been told. I learned about the existence of this version right here, the same place I learned about the Australian version, Dirty Jobs with Jo Beth Taylor and Ben Dark.
I can only assume the decision to introduce new personalities into an English speaking market was motivated by poor ratings from the version that bears my name. I could be wrong, but regardless, it makes no sense to speculate, or blame anyone but me. Three years ago, in my haste to get Dirty Jobs on the air, I made a foolish deal. I gave up the rights to a concept I created. Now, I get to watch others put their stamp on Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe, and wait to see who's name will next appear in the title. Oh well, serves me right. After all, I stole the idea from George Plimpton. (True, I waited till he was dead, but why quibble?)
As I've said many times before, I am embarrassed to find myself in such a ridiculously helpless position, and humbled by my own stupidity. Live and learn. All I can do now is assure the fans of Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe, that Mike Rowe had nothing to do with Dirty Jobs with Peter Schemeichel. Or Dirty Jobs with Jo Beth Taylor and Ben Dark. Nothing whatsoever. However, I wish all concerned nothing but success. Really. There is no evil villain here, laughing maniacally while twisting his mustache in some fancy corner office. Am I happy with the situation? No. But just because I don't understand something, doesn't mean I've been intentionally wronged. It just means I've been kept in the dark. Hopefully, that will change.
"Do they really think that this is an acceptable alternative to Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe?" Opinions vary. My Mom says no. My Dad adds a few extra words, but the gist is still no. Barsky hasn't noticed, but loves soccer.
"Is there somebody that I can e-mail (or write) to complain?"
Gordon Brown 10 Downing Street London, England
"I understand that the show is not about the entertainment value of the host, but more about honoring the people doing the jobs. How will people learn about the dirty jobs and the people the show is honoring if nobody wants to watch?"
I don't know. But look, to be fair, maybe the show will succeed. Who knows? I still can't figure out why Americans watch what they watch. Never mind the Germans.
"I am not being unduly harsh. This is one show that I will definitely NOT be watching next week." Neither will I. I've already seen it.
"From what I've seen he [Peter Schmeichel] did not only see Dirty Jobs, he made an in depth study of it. And promptly tried to copy Mike."
Well, to be fair, I could probably make an in depth study of Peter Schmeichel's passion, and give professional goal tending a try. Doesn't mean I'd be much good at fending off a 70 mph penalty shot, but there you go. Viewers have a long history of rewarding imitation. I don't hold that against him. Besides, somebody's telling him what to do. And again, who knows? Maybe people will watch Dirty Jobs with Peter Schmeichel. Maybe it will work. I guess we'll all find out together.
Well, if the alternatives are so horrible maybe people will learn to appreciate you even more! SALLY (following you around the MB like a love sick puppy with her tail waggin')
