Hi Angela,

If you do not have regular bark mulch and don't care about appearance, use newspaper with grass clippings over the top and water it down well. you can also put it down in the rain, I love working in the rain-) That's actually the title of my book "Gardening in the Rain"-)

Other alternatives are using an old recycled natural fiber rug, cotton sheet or natural fiber blanket, turning it upside down and covering it with grass clippings. This is called sheet mulching and many use this for vegetable gardening to keep the weeds down. I mulch every two years and with my landscape it is expensive so I alternate each year with clippings and bark. HTH
