I have never been to the opera, but I do enjoy listening to opera music. I have several Pavarotti and Bocelli cds and listen to them often. I love the musicality of it. Sometimes I even sing along (when all the windows are closed and the doors shut). The thing is, I don't speak Italian and don't understand a word of it. When I sing along, it's simply because I've listened to the song so much that I know at least the sound of the words. So, I got to wondering, do people who are involved with opera at an opera company level have to speak Italian or German or whatever language it may be written in in order to sing it? I suspect that they do, but I am curious about it. Did you have to learn the language to sing it?
