Mike here's a question I hope you can and will answer. How do the networks know who and how many people, and in what parts of the country, are watching a particular programs? I think it's called ratings. And I always wanted to know how they do that. Stupid question I know.
Susie, that is not a stupid question. I know of the Nielson ratings; however, I still do not know how they can take a select few and get accurate numbers pertaining to the entire country watching what.
I don't see how the networks can possibly know the true ratings of shows any more. There are so many ways to view them. I just wish they would give new shows more of a chance then they do. Many of tv's biggest hits were duds for the first year. Everything is so fast paced now, that if you don't bring in big overnight ratings, you are cancelled. I have yet to find Discovery's ratings of shows. I think DC is first, but is DJ second? We keep hearing about it being a big hit, yet I have no idea of it's actual rating. Neither of these shows are ever in the top 20 shows on tv, so how are they such big hits. Big for Discovery I guess.
I did one of those Nielsen surveys where you track what you watch for a week. At the end of the week I looked over the book and it alternated between DJ's, baseball games amd the news. I hope someone over at Nielsen got a good laugh from that book.
Nicole, I did that once as well a long time ago. One for every TV in the house LOL and I to thought they would laugh , because I think we only watched four things that week.
Loretta, I really would like to know how they do it they seem to know the next morning. And since I don't know anyone in TV I figure ask Mike LOL.
