And being a SAHM, while great for some, may not work for all. Funny how the exact same phrase can be applied to a choice that you so vehemently oppose.

Umm where did I say I vehemently oppose it? I'm pointing out that sending ones children to school and the parent going to work are two different things.

Uh, how about 1 parent, regardless of gender, loses their job and the other has to take up the slack? OR how about the fact that DAD stays at home with a sick child and MOM works? WHY do you automatically ASSUME it'd be mom to stay at home? And you know what they say when you assume????? Don't be so quick to judge OR assume when you don't have to right to in the first place.

I don't understand the aggrivation in your post. I'm not assuming or judging anything. I'm merely showing that the scenerio put forth as a reason to somehow question the decision of a Mom to stay home can work both ways. Where is the judging in this post?

You automatically assume that mom will stay at home. That shouldn't be. This is 2008. Dad can stay at home just as well.

When our daughter had the chicken pox at age 2, I had only been back to work for about 1.5 years and didn't have a lot of sick leave build up. My husband is a retail manager so we split shifted it...I went in at around 1pm and worked til 9; he worked in the am and then relieved me. This way, she had a parent at home. However, we BOTH stayed with her. It should NEVER be just mom... To assume that it'd always be JUST mom is dumb.

again your tone is unfounded, also interjecting the word dumb as well. I think I'm posting with respect and I'd appreciate the same. Read the post I responded to. I merely put forth a scenrio similar to the original one to illustrate my point that tragedy can strike and affect ANY living arrangement. I'll leave it at that, as I'm not really willing to banter back at forth when little insults are being hurled. Moreover the original idea I responded to assumes that a SAHM couldn't care for her children if her husband were to die that's quite an assumption as well.

When SAHM's say dumping kids at daycare I think they mean infants/toddlers who are there from 8-10 hours per day. Lets be honest. You can't compare that to grade school children who go from 9-3. The thought of putting an infant/toddler in daycare all day would literally break my heart, but unfortunately many women don't have a choice. Let's just not pretend that there aren't infants/toddlers in daycare 8-10 hours per day. I'm sorry to say that I know way too many.

As a SAHM, I will tell you my plan in case something happens and my husband is no longer able to work.
First, nothing is bought on credit. If we cant pay cash for something, we dont need it. This does include our house. End of discussion. Simply eliminating the interest portion of car payments, credit cards, and mortgages eliminated the need for a second income. But we took our planning even further...
Second, we grow our own food and get this...it's organic and free.
Third, we use solar panels to provide electricity to our home. Our house is heated using electricity. We have a well and a septic so our only bills are our phone and internet, monthly this is less than $100.
Fourth, we homeschool. By far, our biggest expense, but still cheaper than sending four kids to school.
Fifth, we put away 25% of our income for retirement and another 25% goes into a saving account-the just in case fund. There is enough money in our retirement fund to cover all four kids going to the college of their choice and for us to retire comfortably-that's not counting what is in the just-in-case account. We are not yet 40, so we still have plenty of time to add to these account as well.
When my husband and I decided that I would be a SAHM, we made a plan and stuck to it, only adjusting it when we figured out another way to save money, such as installing the solar panels.
You wanted a SAHM to state her plan so I did. I may be the exception to the rule, but hey, now you know at least one SAHM's mom who has a plan and was willing to share it with you. Yes, I admit that I do look down on working moms. Just because a mom is working doesn't mean she has a plan. It just means that she is working outside the home.
There are other aspects that I didn't share with you, such as health insurance, life insurance, and my retirement account (built from interest made on other accounts.) But I think I shared enough of my plan that you can probably figure out that these details are taken care of as well.
