I am getting my first tattoo in a couple weeks. It is going to be around my left wrist. I'm a little apprehensive because I'm not sure what to expect pain wise. Does anyone have any advice on how to stay somewhat calm until the artist actually starts the tattoo?

Bring someone with you, or talk to your artist. My artist happens to be a very good friend of mine, so when she inks me, we talk nonstop the entire time. It helps me relax and unfocus from what she is doing, and puts me at ease.

Sometimes having a friend with can make you more nervous though, especially if you feel you have to put up a front for them and not show you feel the pain or whatever. (although personally anyone that you would feel you had to act like that in front of aint no friend in my book...).

In the times when I couldnt talk to my artist (I'm deaf and read lips), I've watched movies or read a book...anything to focus on something other than sitting there thinking "needle, needle, pain, pain." Smile

Wrist is a fairly painful place, but remember, the pain only lasts a little while. You'll survive.

I just got my ninth tattoo on my right wrist and unfortunately this one hurt the worst. However, it was worth it. You will be fine. Good luck

My last tattoo I got, the artist was around my age. We had quite a bit in common, so it was easy to find subjects we could discuss. That also made the time go by quickly.

My sister was with my at my first one. I wasn't scared about getting a tattoo. She even considered about getting it done. By the time I was done, she completely changed her mind about getting one at all.

I think my best advice would be make sure you have eaten before you go to the tat studio. Having something in one's stoamche can be a little calming. As your waiting listen to your favourite music. Perhaps when they start on your tat they could play your music?. But most importantly remember your reasons as to why your there getting a tat. Also think of the symbolic value of your tat and what it means to you!! Lot's of girly luck.

so i got my tattoo done today and it wasn't bad at all. Smile it didn't hurt for me at all, it just felt like someone was bumping a sunburn i had. i think shots are more painful. the buzzing was more annoying than the process of a tattoo. it was great. i'd do it again tomorrow if i had a design and the cash. i'll post pics once it heals.
