So I'm told... Kindergarten is no longer coloring and cutting. In an effort to keep up in with global trends, most American schools aim to have children reading by age six. I think it's fantastic, I really do. My daughter is five and in kindergarten today. I'm so impressed with what she's learning, and the quick progress she's making. However, my son has a minor sensory issue and in preschool. I'm already worried that he's not going to be able to keep up. We have all the safeguards in place, and evaluations underway. But I wonder if we're somehow leaving kids behind...
I'd love to hear how things are in your children's schools, especially if they are a little older. Do you see your children's grades being more aggressive educationally than when you went to school? How do you feel about kids' curriculum? Weigh in! Thanks, Jen
Oh, yes. Kindergarten is the new first grade. And first grade is the new 2nd grade, and on and on. My little Simone is in 1st grade and has homework every week. I'm blessed, as is she, by her smarts, so it's a joy, but this ain't easy for many, make that most, kids. It's helping ME prepare for "homework" when she's 10, 12, etc., which is good, too. But aren't our kids growing up too fast in too many ways? Isn't this just one more of them? I wish that it were all about fun for awhile. Appreciating the wonder and joy of being just a KID??
