The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade of 2004 was the experience of a lifetime for my family and me for a number of reasons. First off, my children would accompany their Daddy, Jose Feliciano, on the HERSEY float, as he’d sing his perennial Christmas hit, “Feliz Navidad.” It certainly would prove to be a wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving as a family together in the New York City.
But in recent days, the memory of that part of this magical morning is being overshadowed by the fact that upon our arrival that early morning we were escorted to a trailer to await our next move and found ourselves waiting with Steve Irwin! We sat together at the dining table in the rear portion of the trailer as he talked about his family, especially Bindi Sue his new son, and that from there he would be going on to work on an upcoming program about the African elephant.
Our younger son, Michael, has always been fascinated by Stevo and his work and even hopes to become a naturalist someday. This photo shows his determination in putting on ‘the look,’ and being very much his own version of his hero, Steve Irwin.
Today, our hearts are broken as we come to terms with the terrible loss to the Irwin Family, the Australia Zoo and to the animal world who found a friend – indeed a warrior-- in Steve Irwin. The memory of that Thanksgiving morning is our own, personal and very sweet gift that we have now to treasure forever.
To the Irwin Family we wish you God’s peace in your hearts; please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless you.
