My name is Jessica Harrell and my husband and I own a Tattoo shop in Ada Oklahoma!! As I am sure you already know they just leagalized Tattooing here!! When the state came out with the regulations I was Upset, they were making it impossible to open a studio by putting silly and good for nothing regs in the bill.. We were required to have a $100,000 surity bond and be 1000 ft from a school church or playground not to mention the 7 ft walls between artist incase of blood splatter, (now if you know anything about tattoos you know that if there is splatter you are doing something seriously wrong) so when it came down to me and about 150 other shops being shut down because we could not obtain a $100,00 bond and we are in the bible belt there is a school church or playground on every corner, oh ya and a strip club only has to be 500 ft.. Anyway I made a phone call to our state reps and found out that I needed to form an Association and that we needed to sue the state for a permanate injuction against these two laws in the bill. Well even though my husband thought I was crazy I went ahead and started the Association of Body Art (for tattoo establishment owners) and then I went ahead with sueing the state!! It was long and crazy but on May 7th of 2007 Judge owens of the Oklahoma city Judicial court found the 2 regulatins in the bill unconstitutional and granted us a permanant Injuction (Yay).. We now can open our shops without the bond and don't have to worry about setbacks from churches, schools, or playgrounds.. We now donot have to worry about the $5,000 fines for being open without a lic, because you could not get a lic till you got the bond, and my children when they grow up are now able to if they decide go to an artist of their choosing(as long as I know they are clean and great artist lol) at an establishment here in Oklahoma and get some great Body Art!! The Association still meets once a month and we are working tword a convention in the near future!! Any way I would love to be able to get Omi and Garver and everyone from miami to come and visit our shop in Ada and show Oklahoma why I did what I did!! Show them it is not just about putting some ink under your skin, It is about Beautiful pieces of Art that people cherish!! My final thought Oklahoma is known for being in the bible belt and they go to church every sunday ,wed, and they love being surrounded by the stain glass and murals that are in the churches that they attend. Tattoos they need to learn if done by a good artist can be just as beautiful.
