My friend's 10 year old sister has a dwarf hamster, Penny, and she bites like crazy. You stick your hand in the cage and she'll lunge at you and try to bite you. If you leave her alone and you're just in there to grab something or put a treat in she's normally ok but they never take her out because she'll bite your fingers off. She takes good care of her and didn't do anything to hurt her so why would she be all bitey like this? And she bites hard too
Dwarf hamstsers just tend to bite more. It sounds like the hammy hasn't been properly tamed. It takes a lot of time and patience to do this. And you need to handle dwarfs every day or they will lose their tameness very fast as compared to syrians where they pretty much stay tame after they are tamed. I have a very tame Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamster who has NEVER bitten anyone. It just takes time and experience to handle one properly.
They usually are ALWYAS bitey....I dont really like them much, but they are really cute but i dont like there personalities...if you have hamster questions you need to ask me, I can give you informative correct answers...Ive had ALOT of them and worked in a vets office...so i kinda know what im talkin about! good luck with all your hams.
It seems like all of the ones I see are bitey too, especially at petstores where people just shove their hands in there and pretty much torture the poor things. I think that makes them even more grumpy than they already are. I usually choose the one that is most mellow and likes to sit in my hand. They are so cute!
i have a russian dwarf hamster too!!!! he bites when you put your hand in the cage but once hes out he is fine. he is probably just territorial you could try wearing gloves when you pick him up, so you won't get hurt and he gets used to it.
Hi. I'm 10 and possibly getting a hampster for my birthday. What is the best breed to get???? Also its my first rodent. Also can they be all black or all white????
I like syrians the best. Yes you can get them in all black and all white. All black ones are called black bear hamsters. A black bear hamster is just a fancy way of saying black syrian hamster. White ones are pretty uncommon. I haven't seen one but I know they exist.
