Recently ive been depressed and nothings been chearing me up. So to try and cheer me up my friend took me to work with her at a pet shop to keep my mind of things. when i got there they just had delivered three young sable ferrets. they were so playfull and so crazy and all over the place that i instantly fell in love with the little critters. i had never thought of owning a ferret, in fact i had never even held one till that moment. But the joy the little ferrets brought me that day and the instant attachment i felt to them was enough for me to start asking for one. my mom hates rodents, any kind, hamsters, guinie pigs, rats, you name it. so it was an instant no. Now im depressed once again and i really want one now more than ever. i looked up everything about ferrets and learned as much as i could about them but i feel im nowhere near to convincing my mom. i dont know what to do at this point.

Whoa! That is soo freaky! When I was younger I went to my friends house and she had a beautiful ferret! I held it all day!! But when I got home and asked my mom about getting one.....well I guess its a mom thing. NO!. So from there on I just wanted to get A pet, nomatter what kind. I asked for a rabbit..NO! I asked for a bird...NO! I asked for a cat...NO! I asked for a million other pets! You've probaly been thinking,"Why hasn't she asked for a dog?". But you have to understand, I was NOT a dog person at all!! I hated dogs! Really bad* I started getting depressed too, until my family decided to get a German Shepherd. For the first year I didn't spend any time with it, I never pet it, nothing! I guess it was about the second year we had it that I got sorta intrested in it, a little. Let me tell you- I spent a couple hours playing with it and I was suddenly so happy! I came into the house and I went up to my Mom and I said,"I feel like I Smile just got a new dog!". From there on I was the family member that spent the most time with this dog. I walked it, I trained it, I played with it, I bathed him, everything! That dog is still alive today. So whenever I'm feeling sad or blue I'll go to my dog and just sit down next to it, instant joy! You may not be a dog person, you may have a dog that you think isn't all that great, but when you start to spend some time with it, you'll be so surprised the abundance of joy you'll find* That's really true with any animal, not just dogs. My point is that your Mom may not allow you to get a ferret, but they're not the only animals that bring joy* Maybe you should consider a dog*
Anyway, I hope I gave you a new angle to look at your problem. I hope you find joy, and find it soon*

You need to prove to her that it's not just a phase and you're going to care for it for the rest of it's life.

Before you do that though, make sure you're going to have enough money. When I first got my ferret it cost us somewhat over $500 to get started. And you have to take into consideration yearly vaccinations.

For my mom, I just asked her, and she said yes because I gave her all the facts and explained to her how I would manage everything.

Just try to figure everything out and then sit down and explain your entire plan to your mom.

No offense or anything...but why is not being able to get a ferret soooo depressing? I mean, it's not the end of the world, again, no offense. Roll Eyes

She hates rodents?

Well that's good!! Ferrets are NOT rodents. I repeat NOT rodents. I don't know why people think they are.

They are under exotic pets in America. They EAT rodents for crying out loud.

Second off you need to know what you're jumping into. Every single ferret is completely different.

I'm on my 7th ferret and she's so far the only one that has ever been able to truly jump.

A ferret will get into absolutely everything you own. You put up a gate? They'll get over it. You get a new latch for the cage? They will open it. Plants? Consider either chicken wiring the pots, or consider them dead.

They aren't rodents that just stay in a cage all day. They NEED play time especially if you're only getting one.

There's a lot of tricks to ferrets. They're like bathing slippery snakes, they'll beg, they'll open zippers on backpacks and purses and steal everything.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. But please never say a ferret is a rodent again. And explain to here that they are not.

They can be trained. But it takes work to own one. They are a mix between a cat and a dog. You get the cuddle time, plus the fun play time, plus the loyalty.
