My teacher told me that if a hampster doesnt have something to chew on than their teeth dont stop growing and they grow so long that they cant eat and starve to death. I have a hampster and havent noticed her teeth growing but I am nervouse and just wanted to know if anyone knows if this is a true fact or not.
Hamsters are part of the rodent family, like all rodents their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives. Yes, if they do not chew their teeth will continue to grow in an arc back into their mouths which makes it hard to eat! In an extreme it can grow back into the roof of the mouth. But, hamsters an natural gnawers so they usually wear them down sufficiently.
My brother and I both raised hamsters for a goodly amount of time and he owned on called Harvey who had a jaw deformity, this made it hard for her wear her teeth down. We noticed it when her teeth started get longish! Took her to the vet and they told us what to do in her case. We got one of those pet nail clippers that's open instead of enclosed and nipped them down every so often. She was able to eat and drink with no trouble at all!
Under normal circumstances, as long as a hamster has something to chew they'll be just fine. Ours used to make habits of biting their wire wheels! Out of all the hamsters we owned over the years only Harvey had teeth issues. You're safe.
Yes. they can grow to the brain witch it will damage it and soon will die. if u don't take of that soon it WILL STARVE IT-SELF TO DEATH. i can tell you more, my screen name is Yankeebabygurl7 talk to me soon.♥
Yes, they grow. Chew sticks can help prevent overgrowth; however, if your hamster's teeth appear to be overgrown already than I strongly recommend that you take your pet to the vet to have them filed down. It causes no pain to your hamster and prevents serious complications.
