Yesterday we were given a female, longhaired, guinea pig from a woman whose sister had owned the pig, but recently died. We brought her home, and she's been freaking out since. I figured she may need a few days to calm down, which is fine, but her cage really needs cleaned (the sister wasn't taking care of her) and her hair is matted and could use a good brushing. But I have no idea how to accomplish either when the poor girl is so terrified and not pleased. Does anyone have any suggestions?

GPs usually get used to you quickly. Start giving her treats by putting your hand in the cage and waiting for her to come near you. If she doesn't, slowly move your hand and treat to her. Start petting, talking nicely, and whistling to her. Then pick her up and put her on the couch, in the bath tub, in a box, or have somebody hold her. Go clean the cage. Get a cat brush and start slowly brushing her... Or you can cut her fur. It'll grow back and will make her feel much better.
