Where I live, animals need help and fast. Unwanted animals are set out at trash dumps to defend for them selves. One dog that I have saved was about 2-3 months old and was set out at a trash dump in a ice-storm. The young pup was begging a man to take her, but he didn't so my younger sister and my mom did. I just fell in love with the pup and decided to keep her. I named her Mindy. Another dog that my family has saved was a young pup and she and her brother and sister was set out at the trash dump. We talked a man into taking one of the pups. My family and I tried for 4 or 5 days to catch the other 2 pups and finally succeed. The pups was terrified of humans. They showed signs of beening abused. We found the brother pup a loving home and we kept the sister. We named her baby and she is doing a lot better than what she was. ~*If anyone wants to talk to me more and see pictures of these sweet and loving dogs, you can add me to your msn at kayla18_87@msn.com.*~ I see this every day...dogs, cats, puppies and kittens left alone. I have heard people talking about abusing animals just for the fun of it. People putting cats in trash-bags and throwing it in the river, people beating animals with base-ball bat, shooting them with bee-bee guns, and a lot other unthinkable things! My neighbor had a dog, he worked all the time...and the dog would go for days without food and water. The dog never got any attention from his owner. The dog stayed chained so he couldn't help him self. The chain was only about 4-5 feet long. I would go over and let the dog off the chain so he could run and play. I would feed the dog and give him water every day. He was a "BIG" dog, he came up to about my thighs, and you could see every bone in his body. He was so skinny that you could pick him up. The dog was about 1-2 years old and have never had a bath. Every time I would take the dog off the chain, he would stay in my yard...he didn't want to go back, he wanted to live with me. He was like my dog...I called hime my. I would suggest to the owner things that he should do, but nothing would be done. After taking care of him for about a month, he finally gained weight...and his owner founded him a new home. I have tried to call the cops on an animal abuse case where there was a stay dog and these teen-age boys would take a collar put it on the dog and put fire-crackers in the collar and light them. The cops did nothing!! I had a dog that I loved so very much, her name was Pookie, she was poisoned with Anit-feeze. We spent over 1,000 dollars to try to save her. She suffered so very bad and she wasn't the first or last dog to be poisoned. We called the cops and nothing was done. These animals need help!! They depend on us to take care of them, they trust us and people go and do things like this to these helpless animals. If we dont stand up and take action, than who will?

Wherever you live, there should be a humane society or ASPCA nearby, or some sort of animal control organization. They're more likely to help you than the local cops. If there isn't an animal control/rescue or humane society organization anywhere near where you live, call the cops every day, until they investigate! The squeaky wheel really does get the oil. They can't ignore you if you keep calling them. If all else fails, you could contact Pasado's Safe Haven, which is an animal sanctuary. This non-profit organization also rescues animals, takes on animal abuse cases, works on getting animal-protection legislation passed, and helps direct people who have been dealing with situations like yours. Their website is www.pasadosafehaven.org. They have a specific webpage with some advice about animal abuse/cruelty: http://pasadosafehaven.org/CONTACT%20US/Abuse_Neglect.htmYou can contact them by e-mail about your situation, at lbrothers@hotmail.com. Please--don't give up! Good luck.

Thank you, khv, for caring for the animals!
I have a few more ideas-
1) Contact some of the big humane societies (hsus.org, peta.org. bestfriends.org) Look around on their websites for contact emails and forums. For example, peta has an email address to report cruelty. HSUS has some regional offices that may be able to help, Best Friends has some local brigades. Keep calling, writing, emailing!
2) Become your own journalist! Take a video camera and FILM the abandoned pets, the abuse. Put together some video and post on youtube.com Then contact the media in your area and state and get them to look at the video and describe all the problems. Heck, MAKE A MOVIE! It doesn't have to be fancy- just get the problems across.
3) Also consider writing an ARTICLE with pictures. And submit to some pet magazines like Bark, Modern Dog, Animals Agenda. Look online for their contact info. Also submit to newspapers in your area and state.
(You write very well! Maybe you will consider becoming a journalist! The animals need more friends in the media!)
4) contact a humane society in your state that is active in pursuing LAWS against cruelty and help join in lobbying to get laws passed. Things won't change until there are LAWS to protect the animals!

KHV18 and tell777,
May I just suggest that you use PETA as a LAST resort. If you need to be taken seriously by ANY organization or government official, and you are working with PETA you will probably run into alot of problems. You are better off working with the HSUS. They are an accredited organization that is taken seriously by the government and society. Just my personal opinion.

I know it has been some time since you first posted your email but I was wondering if you contacted the ASPCA or your local representatives. Many cops simply do not care. Some feel they are here to serve and protect humans and not animals. It absolutely torments me when humans act this way. Please try to contact the ASPCA or even your state police rather than local cops. Let me know how you make out.

Thanks very much to all of you. I have emailed ASPCA and many more. I will not give up and hopefully we can change all of this. And maybe now something will get done. And thanks to all of you... I now have a better idea of how I can go about doing things. Hopefully now, we all can make a differences. Thank you so much!!

I found this poem on the internet and I just wanted to share it with you.
A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun -- too faithful to leave, too frightened to run. He's been there for days now with nothing to do but sit by the road, waiting for you. He can't understand why you left him that day; he thought you and he were stopping to play. He's sure you'll come back, and that's why he stays -- how long will he suffer? How many more days? His legs have grown weak, his throat's parched and dry; he's sick now from hunger and he falls, with a sigh. He lays down his head, and he closes his eyes -- I *wish* you could see how a waiting dog dies!
