I live in northern california more specifically in near butte county and i hate to say it but or local paws and aspca is not fairing to well. there are an enormous number of ferrel cats all over the county that no one seems to be able to take care of. there a numerous amount of abandoned kittens and dogs that are literally starving to death and or being eaten alive by parasites and fleas. i have heard several claims from other residents in this county who said that they called the local aspca and even paws to report cats stuck in trees, deathly illl kittens, or emaciated animals and yet nothing was done. the local residents were told to capture the animals and bring them in. One resident actually rescued a litter of kittens with the mother and when she brought the animals in she was charged to leave them. Residents are forced to feel like they have to euthanize most animals caught in severe conditions due to the lack of assistance on the local aspca's part. Myself, i was given a newborn rabbit that was estranged from it's mother by a cat when i tried to call the aspca they told me that the likelihood of the animal's survival was small and that i should just give it back to the cat for eating. What kind of recommendation is that, supposedly coming from a fellow animal lover. what should i do?
I am sorry that your ASPCA said that to you but still do the best that you can. Feed the rabbit and look after it and be with it as often as posable. Just don't give up. This might trun out good after all!
It sounds like your SPCA is overwhelmed and can't take on any more animals. SPCA is a non-profit organization that depends on public assistance. I would check to see if there is a "trap, neuter, release" program where you live. This is one way to help stop the ferrell cat problem.since ferrell cats aren't suitable for adoption and are used to living wild, they are captured, spayed and neutered and then released back to the area. Unable to breed, the population of ferrell cats will be more controlled and the cats don't have to be euthanized. Even large SPCA's sometimes have to euthanize simply because they just don't have the room or the funds to care for more animals. This is one reason why it is SO important to have your pet spayed or neutered. There are more animals than homes. It is a very sad situation. I know that this doesn't help much. I would go to the SPCA and talk with them. Maybe organize a group of like-minded people and brain storm solutions. Offer to foster animals for the SPCA. Organize a fund raising event for Paws or the SPCA. These are just some ideas. Good luck. Tumeria
That's sooo sad! Iwish that We even had an aspca here in Lexington, Kentucky. The only suggestion that I have would be to get a fund raiser going. Maybe You could find a local girl scout or boyscout troop near You and have them help with a fund raiser, not only would it raise money ( PEOPLE WHO LOVE ANIMALS LOVE KIDS) but it would also raise the children's awareness about the plight of the animals. What about a fund raiser dog show? I hope that these suggestions help. Dave & Beverly Fruth
