just thought you lot would find this interesting, that an Australian diesel submarine can cause the US navy so much trouble in a wargame. i guess by nature we aussies are a bunch of smart arses but this is just too funny.
........ and surprise surprise my links dont work... ahh well the gist of it is that HMAS waller a Royal Australian Navy Collins class submarine was sneaking into USS Kitty Hawks battle group undetected during operation Tandem Thrust back in 2001. Using every trick in the book to try and sink the carrier, but alas my links dont work and they explained it much better...
No surprise there. Diesel electric subs are extremely dangerous opponents as they are very hard to detect. The only reason why we don't use them is that they cannot operate for long periods of time submerged like the US Navy preferes to operate.
IIRC, the US Navy tries to make excuses about the wargame rules, but I think that's sour grapes. The Collins and the new German boats are very quiet. The Chinese have some disturbingly quiet boats too.
Without the machinery noise associated with steam plants diesel submarines can be very quiet indeed when operating submergend on battery power, however lets not throw our hands up in disgust that we should have diesel boats, the US submarine fleets sound silencing skills greatly exceed any other submarine force and likely nothing in the ocean in more stealthy than the seawolf class fast attack at slow patrol speed. Along with world leading sonar technology no other submarine in the world dare go head to head......lets try not to compare how someone does against a surface fleet, if a seawolf was escorting the carrier, the diesel boat is dead in the water as soon a tube doors are open.
