I read recently that the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan rescue may possibly be closed if they can't raise 1.5 million dollars. Has anyone else heard about this and if so, any ideas on how to help raise money for them.

Wow thanks Alio!! I did not know this. Thank you for posting it. Save the Orangutan or Orangutan Outreach might have some ideas for raising money. If you have not you should check out their sites. You can donate money or even adopt a orangutan through them. I don't know if it is the same project or not the one you are talking about.

NM has now secured the basic operating costs but needs money for rescues, releases, new islands and other essential activities.

I think you got it all wrong..I think they said its takes about over a million a year to rescue and feed etc...

A million dollars a year for each Orangutan, or for the sanctuary? It cannot be per Orangutan, it costs about a thousand dollars a year to save each Tiger in the wild, that's only to maintain the population of them and not to increase it, and Tigers are a bit more expensive due to their eating habits and weight.

I have not heard anything like that, but it could be. 1.5 million to save a sanctuary like that should not be much to raise compared to other sanctuaries that need 1.5 million yearly to keep them alive. Also, more people in the modern day are animal lovers and donate any kind of money they can for a great cause like this to save these beautiful species.

what the heck thats no fare they cant do that i say we should do something why not do a charity fun for thye orangutans.

I love Orangutans and will donate to any organization in saving them, but I wanted to know if the two websites mentioned on a thread by meerkatsoul are specifically for the sanctuary of Orangutan Island?

The www.redapes website is the U.S.A. branch of BOS which is the Borneo Orangutan Survival organization which is the group that directly supports Orangutan Island and of course that IS Nyrau Menteng. There are MANY websites and groups claiming to be involved in saving the orangutan's, however, I have spent a great deal of time online checking out the various organizations and how reputable they are and what they are really doing to help save the orangutans and I can tell you this much: A donation to ANY of the BOS (redapes in the U.S.A.) websites definitely goes to Nyrau Menteng/Orangutan Island and is actually used to save the orangutans, not pay outrageous salaries to people who "just talk about saving the orangutans!
