One of the victims of the malaria outbreak was Arnold. He's the little guy in a short video with Lone, trying to decide on his name. His arms were so muscled up that she decided to name him after Arnold Schwartzenegger.
They work so hard to save these little animals, I know they grieve at every loss.
Oh No!!! That just makes me sick! He was so healthy looking emotionally and physically! (as compared to many of the orphans that come in without even a will to live!)
I know they must grieve terribly also. It has to be much like losing a child. I lost a small child several yrs ago and i can't help but think of the orphan orangs as children every time I see them.
God Bless Lone and her staff for the heartbreaking yet rewarding sacrafices they make daily.
Actually Arnold died from a type of meningitis, not malaria, not that it makes a great deal of difference. It's sad and unfortunate when any of these magnificent creatures dies, no matter what the cause. The staff at Nyrau Menteng does all it can to try and keep the orangutans healthy and heal those that do become ill, but in spite of that, orangutans still die. I always wonder if those that die would have died had their mothers not been killed and they ended up in the rescue center? Of course there is no way to ever know that. I'm troubled by so many very young and weak orangutan babies being kept in such a confined area where disease can spread so easily and quickly, but I suppose there is no option for them after their mothers have been killed. Were it not for Nyrau Menteng and the dedicated staff there hundreds of orphaned orangutan babies would have no chance at life at all. It's sickening to see the effect that mankinds greed and or ignorance has on the animals we share this planet with. The chimps and gorillas in Africa have it just as bad as the orangutans and are also endangered. It seems almost inevitable that in the near future the only great apes left will be in rescue/rehab facilities and zoos; there being no safe places left in the wild to release them.
Hey Kathy, I'd like to join Hilda (Broom) in welcoming you to this site! There are quite a few short video clips to be found on orangutans, but they are scattered around the internet and you have to look hard to find some of them. The video clips on orangutans and Escape to Chimp Eden are the only way to pass the time between the much too short Orangutan Island Series. The good thing is that the more you learn about orangutans in general the more you will enjoy Orangutan Island; at least I do! In the future I guess I should write down and then post here the link for any new orangutan video clips I come across so everyone can enjoy them without having to do endless searching! Dave
That's so sad. My heart goes out to Lone & all those that work there. I can't quite remember him because of the scheduling has gotten me all mixed up.
I'm so upset the way that Discovery has or shall I say has not promoted the show. And then the way the move it around, don't air it for a while, then show reruns. Figuring out when a new episode is airing shouldn't be so difficult. How do they expect this show to find an audience when those loyal to the show like me, have such a difficult time figuring out when new episodes are airing. The way they have treated season 2 of this show makes me so mad. The same thing goes with Lemur Kindgom. Why is AP treating these great shows like dirt. Then they show terrible shows like Jockies. I refuse to watch that crappy show, as I'm sure they fail to show what happens to the horses once they lose. It's off to Mexico or Canada to make horse meat. I wish AP would get its act together and give TV shows a regular time slot without month breaks so that it is easy to watch shows like OI & Lemur Kingdom.
We're all upset, complained to Discovery & AP, to no avail.
Arnold was a baby shown with Lone in a video clip - she named him Arnold after she commented his arms were so strong, he was like Arnold Schwartzenegger. Then he got the dreaded meningitis. The place is overcrowded, they try so hard.
