As I watched the show, I thought about how scary it was that there were people out there like Bolo selling homes to unsuspecting buyers. Left to his own devices, he clearly would do everything on the cheap. Watch "Holmes On Homes" and you see what cheap gets you.
This is Bolo. Jabenus thanks for comments and Sideliner interesting comment. The only time I do any work is when contractors get sick, or either play games. The unfortunate part Sideliner about the contractor side of things is sometimes being left hanging whether you are paying high dollar or low dollar to contractors. I took a stance of learning the carpentry thru trial and error but I let my contractors watch over me.
That tile deal was when I got a little cocky after being successful in two other homes and tried to install the tile without spacers. I'll admit it I thought I was hot stuff and made an error. I learned in that to have respect for the the rules. In the end what the hay I lost a little time. I still was WAY under budget for that part of the renovation.
Contractors mindset is the whole issue in renovations. It doesnt matter whether they are expensive or cheap contractors, if they want to leave you hanging to do another job that pays more they are going to do so or any other reason.
However I also have learned if you want something done right you outta do it yourself. My name is on these houses so I make sure it would be something I would live in. Doing Renovations is not all about paying a contractor to do work.
I love my investments so much that I get a kick out of helping my contractors do the work or trying to do it on my own and let my contractors check my work.
Some people dont like or try to do it. T.C. hates it. So he is against "investor carpentry" I dont mind getting dirty if it saves money. In all my years of doing this The name of this game always stays the same: "SAVE MONEY".
In the final walkthru, in the master bath, I'm sure Sideliner you thought someone else did that tile. But quite the contrary. Guess who did it? BOLO. I went on and set the tiles again in spite of T.C.'s grumblings and because of my passion to finish it myself and save money it came out flawless.(Yes this time I used spacers) That is why you saw me dancing in the shower cause I was gloating at T.C. cause I did the tile and he was shocked thinking someone else did it.
I'm trying to set a standard Sideliner to have enough confidence in yourself as an investor to at least try to do the work. That wainscott in the living room and dining room? That was my first time doing it and a guy watched over me. It came out great. I have a Passion for a standard of quality.
All that "Holmes on Homes" stuff I dont know about it dont care about it. They do what they do. Bolo does what he does. And Priority #1 is again Save money and Produce Quality!
Being that I am an appraiser I know what the industry standards are and I adhere and supercede those. I might have cost $110 of tile money and demo initially. But I spent $59 on redoing it and did it again fearlessly. Some people dream of paying that amount combined for shower and floor tile with no labor costs. I dont give up cause of beginner mistakes. I want to continue to step in and be in the mix so when contractors get sick or something happens I can keep going and not be helpless and stuck losing time and money. My goal is to teach other investors to stop being stuck by most contractors and learn some or all of the craft. Whether you are full time or part time. No excuses.
Also if you are ever in the Atlanta Area. I welcome you to do a walk thru of any house I have.
Never start using tile spacers, Get Cocky think you dont need it take them out and think in the end it will look nice. JUST USE THE DARN TILE SPACERS!!!
God bless you all and all jokes aside hope every one of you enjoyed the show. Real estate is supposed to be fun not so serious and tight! Enjoy what you do. Money follows Vision!
I wont be posting anything else so everyone enjoy a prosperous 2008 in Real Estate and other things!
My comment had nothing to do with your work or craftsmanship but your desire, in the beginning, not to do things (for instance, not getting rid of the painted wood paneling). It seemed that the other two guys were trying to get you to go the extra mile. I thought that TC came off as the person who was insistent on quality while you were watching the $$$.
To me, the house looked fine in the end. Absolutely no slight intended on the end product.
Hey Aly, This is TC thanks for watching the show, I also tend to laugh @ the stuff I hit Bolo across the head with every day...Keep your eyes open for our NEW upcoming slap stick episodes.
