I've enjoyed most of the episodes that I've seen...but there is something that's really been bugging me....Why do you demolish the kitchen cabinets and toss out the appliances?? I suppose it all depends on how old some of them are...but some of the homes that are being flipped aren't that old. Since you are going to turn a profit from removing the old cabinets and replacing the appliances, why don't you figure in a little extra time to take the cabinets out carefully so they can be donated to Habitat for Humanity??(I have seen it done in one episode) And if the appliances are working or only need minimal repair, donate them to Good Will or some other organization that could fix them and help out someone less fortunate than yourselves?? We live in such a throw away society anymore. I think its a shame to destroy and throw away something just because it doesn't suit your master plan. Do something for your fellow man and donate what can be salvages to the less fortunate. Just a thought
I am with you it is a no-brainer. Do they not realize you can right that stuff off as well. Remember "charity donation" I do this alot and most of these people are clueless. But I still love the show.
I think most flippers have run into the same problem I had...when I tried to take the cabinets down for donation to Habitat, there were no backs to them and they literally fell apart. Also, they won't come in and take them down for you, and they won't accept filthy cabinets either. As far as appliances, I put and ad on Craigslist and gave them away for free since I couldn't guarantee their proper operation. Again, Habitat or any other source of the like can't take broken items. Please know, offsetting our costs is of utmost importance so anything that can be sold before it goes in the dumpster is a blessing. Plus, if you have to get your dumpster dumped it cost another few hundred bucks. Speaking of, I'm going dumpster diving on my way home today to get some furniture I saw dangling out of a local flippers' dumpster. Gotta go! Laura Mac
I watch all of the Flip episodes, and I seldom see any recycling of the cabinets, sinks, and many other items. Can you please incorporate the recycling of re-usable housing parts. Many of the cabinets, sinks, tubs, and doors can be used in Habitat for Humanity projects. It disturbs me to see such items destroyed for no reason.
In a lot of older homes virtually everything I take out is trash. More often than not you have to break apart old cast iron tubs to get them out of the house. The only salvagable suff is in the homes that were bilt in the late 70's and early 80's. Even so, With a budget to keep and a time line to keep. Why should I pay for the extra time to have my guys worry about being careful of taking things out, then paying to store them till someone can come get it. The whole Idea of flipping is to make money, not find ways to be less cost efficient. Now on the other hand, if they want to send someone out that fits in My time line and take out what ever they want and get it off my project the same day. I have no problem witht that.
Habitat does not put used items in it's houses...these are new builds funded by low interest mortgages. Many do however have resale shops to sell these items at very reasonable prices and helps raise money for them. TLC cannot require people to recycle, that is the decision of the flipper.
While it is great if you can donate something, virtually everything I pull out is in unusable condition. I checked out a local habitat store near me and was not impressed at all. It was basically full of junk in worse shape than I throw away. While the slumlords may like to save a few bucks, I wouldn't even think of putting that kind of stuff in my rentals and I surely wouldn't put it in a house I am selling.
Habitat owns and operates a store called ReStore... it is all second hand (with some new) items for sell to the general public, with proceeds going to Habitat For Humanity.
