This has to be one of the greatest highlights in all of my dragon fandome. I swear, the theories these scientists came up with were so much like the ones I believed in all along. Dragons were (or are) dinosaurs, they're survivors of what ever global destruction that wiped out their cousins by diving into the water, and mankind/change of habitat is what brought them to extinction.
Now, I already knew that no one actually found a dragon popsicle; they weren't trying to fool people into believing it, they were just demonstrating what process they would go through to find out what makes a dragon tick. It's a "What if" scenerio, but yet it makes you reconsider the assumption that they're "fantasy" creatures; when they explain all the unique and unreal creatures that we know exist. Now that we've observed how this world of ours can have strange creatures with attributes that are almost unbelieveable, it makes you think think "Well why couldn't a dragon breathe fire?" They also explain that different cultures around the world have stories about dragons, and they were practically isolated from each other. That part of it will bring you to belief; if not that dragons exist, atleast that the possibility is there.
I don't think I've seen a better dragon show since the "Dragonheart" movie. They're not portrayed as evil demons; they're given a more positive light, which is what they should be given; treated as animals instead of monsters from hades. I hope that one day we can do what we've done for bats, lions, wolves, and other misunderstood animals and lift the curse of those hidious supersticions from these magnificant giants. The animation was superb; the dragons were so beautiful and lifelike, it really uplifted my spirits. The courtship scene was probably the best scene in the entire special.
I for one believe they were here, and that there are some out there still. They're hiding in the deepest forests and the most remote locations. This is a HUGE world; to think that ALL dragons are gone from this planet, you forget that they survived the greatest disasters of all time. Life finds a way. Dragons are out there somewhere trying to bring their numbers back up.
You put a lot of thought into that. It's nice to hear a positive reaction. Somewhere there's a thread by mod_kelly (I think that's the name), the subject is something like "post about the special here". I hope you'll say something nice there as well. I'm not sure the folks at AP will see all the small threads. And then again, there are some threads I'd rather they didn't see, if ya know what I mean... lol
omg it never ends.none of the" well thought out "science matters.if the program was on the sci fi channel it would have fit.but u ppl dont get it.its not about what if, or evolution, or seeing dragons in a different light.... its about giving credibility to fiction and misleading the public, however benign.i didnt feel too great about being tricked to watch this program. so dragon lady u want something positive? well here it is,watch more sci fi channel and dont encourage this low handed behavior for gods sake. i cant even read anymore of this drivel and if i wasnt bored at work i wouldnt bother.... i dont know what is worse, that show or the smacktards that support it.

Hornetson, the only reason you think it is drivel is beacause you were actually convinced that it was all real at one point, and AFTER they disclaimed everything, you thought thay were heartless liars who delighted in other people's crushed hopes. The choice of finding the real point of something is yours alone. If you chose to block out everything when they say "It's not true" then you're just as terrible as you say THEY are!!!
show never claimed taht Dragons are Dinosaurs unless I mist it. but they said it was LIKE a large Theropod.also pesonaly, that theory is imposible. as it wold have had to sperae from the dinosaurs and thre is no proof of a spilt, of flying animal (Unless you count Birds) But it is possible when Pterosaurs and dinosaurs broke a Dragon could be formed. though I would have to look at the Reptile Evolotion tree for that
There is also one theory that there is no way of defending (It was even dissproved in another post) Is that The Hydrgen wouldn't even help the baby Dragon fly. a Full grown Dragon would have to way 600 pounds for the hydrogen to help.
also it would be hard for an air based aniaml to eveoove to go into the water, in a few seccond/minutes, because thats how long it would have taken. now unless dragons survived it it could have went to the water, in about a thousand years because in the aniamls world despreat times cause for despreat messures and it would evolove faster but by then the dust and acid rain from the astoroid would have stoped. so the theeory on how they survived would have to be re-thought.
also the Preihoric Dragon would have not been able to fly so grace fully and freely at that size it's impossible. so MY guess is it would have to be pterosaur like. and a abit smaller. and with that it would be able to fly.
My opinion is that dragons would use helium to fly, and hydrogen and another gas that it is combustible with (possibly what they use in hydrogen bombs, only under less pressure) to breath fire. Helium has much more lift than Hydrogen and combined with the wings, which are long enough to at least help the dragon glide, would enable the dragon to fly. The hydrogen will be made from separating it from oxygen in water and storedin a large sac in the back of the throat similar to a salivary gland. The dragon will get its catalist by eating it, not so sure it will be platinum though.
^ Like I said in the show it would be IMPOSSIBLE! because the baby was 900 pounds teh mom would be like 4 tons! The sacs alone on teh aby would ahve to be half it's size to help.
Originally posted by the_flamer: well...um...thank you for helping proves that dragon's never could fly...let alone exist... i thought you believed in dragons?
Im am equaly confused. as when did puting down some theorys from a TV Show that barly sepnt any time on hem make you a non-beiliver? Dragon could ahve easly flyed but, they would ahve have be smaller and more light weight.
It was made to make us think. They made the Dragons's special to give the audience an idea for what it would be like if dragons were to have existed. In the long run, the idea was to make the audience think about the possibility of dragons ever existing.
Too many people here don't take the special seriously and blame Animal Planet for lying to its audience. The fact of the matter it they said none of it was true. They said that they were trying to get people to believe in the possibility of dragons existing, not telling people that dragons did exist. It was meant to be something interesting. If it captured its audience and made them keep watching, don't you think these people accomplished their job?
As for scientific facts, they did have biologist helping them out. It is difficult to try to mix fantasy with science, but they did it. Unfortunatly not everything was as perfect as it could have been. The wing design on the Prehistoric Dragon was off. The leathery parts of the wings should have extended down to the base of its tail. The breastbone should have been deeper, bones more like that of birds (not hollow, but lightweight), and the hydrogen bladder a bit larger.
And for all those who did watch the special and didn't bother to pay attention to the last thirty minutes of it, they had an extremely large disclaimer. The specifically said that they made the special to show what it would be like if draogns did exist. They wanted to get people to believe in the possibilities. It's true that I got sucked into everything that they were saying, but I watched the final disclaimer and sort of just laughed it off and started thinking that this was really interesting. Not once was I upset and Animal Planet for airing this special. And I'm sort of surprised people insult this program but say nothing about Animal X which I find to be extremely disrespectful to the people who witnessed these attacks firsthand.
All in all, I thought the special was great. I don't mind watching it again at all. The graphics were extraordinary, the dragons looked as if they were real. They did the best they could in trying to make these dragons as real as possible. The last thirty minutes especially intrigued my becaue I am an aspiring animator and I always want to learn how things are done in animated movies and such.
And for Hornetson, I do not believe this is worthy of the Sci Fi channel. The thing they explore there are strictly of fiction. They do not provide or even attempt to provide the evidence needed to explain anything that they speak of, because they don't need it. At least they attempted to provide scientific facts. No person on this earth can be perfect because, as we say "We're only human". I do not think it is right to say the show had no scientific facts whatsoever because researchers used their knowledge of animals and environment to the best of their ability to make this special seem real.
"(possibly what they use in hydrogen bombs, only under less pressure)"
Actually, in H-bombs, it's an isotope of hydrogen, called tritium [yes, tritium exists, it's not just a movie prop from spider-man] and lithium, and it uses nuclear fusion to power the bomb.
