As luck would have it I saw this show in Scotland during a visit to the U.K. two weeks ago. What we saw here in America was a shortened, and in my opinion, a much diminished show. The British version of this show was called "The Last Dragon" and had more to it. First of all the segments where the scientists were disecting the infant dragon's body were actually part of a story that was entirely cut out of the American version. These segments concerned a skeptical American palentologist being called in to examine the supposed body of a dragon found in a Carpathian Glacial Cave. What we saw as mear background footage was a rather neat story where the scientists examine and discover the dragons anatomy and try to peice together how the dragon functioned, how it died and what it ate. They also try to solve the mystery of the human bodies in the cave and ultimately discover that the dragon is an infant and as a consequence discover the adult dragon. As I said, this was all cut out and the footage used as background to the narration. Because of the constant narration in the American version, the soundtrack was muted throughout. The dragon's roar and other ambient sounds were better in the British version because the scientist segments and explanations meant that there wasn't a need for constant narration. The American versions CGI was also edited here and there to shorten the program. The one segment I noticed was the forest dragon. The American version shortened this one quite a bit and as I recall the mimicking a pig and roasting the meat was glossed over. I liked this program a lot and I am saddened that the American audience wasn't treated to this version. I only hope that a DVD of this version of the show is made available for the American audience. I can't see the reason for editing it so heavily. There was nothing in the British version culturaly that anyone in America wouldn't understand. (The skeptical palentologist was an American!) I think this version of Dragons cheats the American audience out of much better story.
Goodness I hope so!! What a rip off! Though I still firmly beleive that dragons could have been real... despite some of the major flaws with musculature.
People, the "get dvd" button at the main site gives you the Discovery version of this special, which has the story and the scenery. It's called "Dragonsworld: A Fantasy Made Real."
