i am looking for a small bird that does well without a partner. I have a small cage and there isn't enough room for two birds. I was thinking about a finch, but i don't know. help.

If your cage is truley that small then you really don't want a bird any bigger than a finch. Anything bigger requires a larger cage, and since the cage is tiny, don't try forcing more birds in it. That is bad news.

A good rule of thumb is if you spread your arms out and turn around and you are not touching any walls then you have enough room and it's the same with a bird. If however you are bumping a companion it's time to pitch the cage and upgrade.

You might try a canary. They do well with human-only contact, and they’re not terribly big either.

As yambalady said about the cage size, however I wouldn't even put a finch in it. They need long cages for flight as they fly along, not go up & down like parrots, smae goes for canaries. If it's too small for 2 birds, then how are you going to get toys in their without the bird tangling up in it all. Regardless of the bird you may need a bigger cage anyway, longer for finches & canaries, bigger all round for small parrots.
