Hi i have 2 ducks they went to a friends house for 3 weeks when they got their a wild duck flew into their pool and didnt leave when i brought my duck home i noticed this flabby looking thing under her! (it wasnt there when i dropped them off) she was laying an egg every 2 days before and since i brought her home she hasnt laid any... but the wild duck was a male and my 2 are females. yesterday i opened their cage and usually they both jump out but only one did... there was only one egg in the cage but the duck didnt want to come out! i left her in their and gave them fresh food and water usually they break their eggs when i go to give them water and food because their bad eggs but she didnt break it could she be pregnant? also shes usually very social loves kisses and likes to follow me around and me flip her on her back and rub her belly now she just attckes my and bites! their is only one egg but she isnt sitting on it! shes near it but not on it

Dear lilbritt91493l,

I have raise ducks for a long time. I have learned a lot by raising them. Based on what you wrote, one possible reason why she is not social is yes maybe she is pregnant. Actually, ducks don’t become pregnant they just lay fertilized eggs that hatch into ducklings. She is very defensive of her egg like most mothers. Now you say she does not want to sit on it. That is typical for most domestic (friendly) ducks. They will sit on it for a while then move around and not sit on it. My advice would be let her be for a little while until all the fertilized eggs are out of her. Again this is based on what you told me. Smile

thanks for the info. but there is 2 eggs now, both of the ducks are girls and are protectiong the eggs neither will come out now i and when i was cleaning their cage (i did the front of the cage not the back where the eggs are located)they were only protecting one egg. is this normal? about how many eggs will she lay? they are both peking ducks the wild male duck was a mallard. about how long will it take for them to hatch? when i was cleaning her cage though she put her foot on top of the egg. is that normal?

Both are females so one egg might have been fertilized while the other is not. Maybe one female was fertilized and the other is not.

It’s common for pekin ducks to lay 125-225 a year. I’m not sure how many fertilized eggs will come out.

28 a days, but since it is a cross between a mallard it may take less. Now depending if the egg gets enough heat or not will decide how long it will take. I don’t know if they will hatch since domestic ducks aren’t good mothers. Meaning they might not give it the proper care.

Seems to me that might be a protective gesture.

Getting a duck to sit on ann egg is hard unless its a malard. I use incubators to hatch mine.

Hi. What happened to the eggs? I have two pet Cherry Valley (similar to Pekin) and Monty a large Rouen (large mle mallard) I hatched him from an egg I bought from a fridge in a farm shop! My two girls lay eggs every day. Lately one (Daisy) has been quacking every time I take them, she started sitting on them so I thought she was being protective. I let her do it and she stopped after a few days and the eggs went cold, but this seems to have got it out of her system!

I know a way to make a chicken sit on eggs, I don't know if it would work with a duck.
