Hi, You can start by being a companion to your parakeet. Other than the kitchen, you might want to place your bird in a room where you will be in contact often. I usually like to sit in the same room as the bird several times each day and just talk to it. You want to build up trust. You should speak quietly to your bird.
This is actually a more difficult question to answer than it would appear.
You will be able to build a friendly trusting relationship with your parakeet by supplying its needs. Fresh water and food, companionship and conversation with your keet will go a long way in keeping him/her happy.
You can play some soft music in the background. You can leave a TV on. My guys like cartoons:-)
Even if your bird is in the cage, you can play with him/her. Most of my guys like Peek-a-Boo as a game. It can be very simple, just put your head down, cover your eyes , then pick up your head and say Peek-a-Boo. Don't stare at your bird and feel free to use a silly voice:-) when playing.
Many keets will learn to play with you and will eventually lower and raise its head and chirp a keet version of Peek-a-boo.
As tou and your bird get comfortable, you may want to teach it how to do step-ups. I reccommend teaching a bird step ups after the wings are trimmed by a bird groomer or a vet.
I have a section on my website that talks about teaching step ups. you can go to: http//www.birdscomefirst.org
Hi, I have A parakeet of my own and what I did when I first got him was that I tried to get his trust and I didnt try to grab him or talk to him really loud because that might scare him/her,and you will start off bad when your starting starting A relationship with your parakeet.I did this for about A week, then I started his training.I hope this helps you.
