We have to tiels, polly and Pippin. Both were around dogs before we got them. But Polly still freaks out when she sees a dog because shes been living with us about 6 years. We just got a new puppy. If we train her to be nice with the birds (we wont take them out of their cage to run around if shes right there) will she hurt them? would they mind??? So far she's just wathced them but we havent had her near them very much.
This might be a question for the dog forum but i though id ask u guys first....
You can train your puppy to be friendly to your birds. What size of dog will it grow up to be? Even though the dog may like the birds it may still get interested and jump up on the cage injuring the birds. Honestly, I wouldnt risk it, but that is totally up to you considering you know the behavior of both your birds and puppy.
jerryfalco- My puppy sould probaly grow to be about medium sized, (if u know how big that is...)
We keep our birds in the livingroom and we're training Echo (my puppy) not to go in there because she likes to go to the bathroom there. But every once in awhile she'll sneak in and ake a look at the birds. She hasn't tried to hurt them but she just stares at them...
How big is your bird cage? If its not to large there are special hooks and chains that are meant for hanging up bird cages. That would solve the problem altogether. If I were you, I would play with the birds in front of the dog so that it knows that they are not meant for a "puppy chew toy" ( sorry to sound to blunt). There is a little hunting dog at my house and when we first introduced her to my birds it wanted to "eat" them because it is in the dogs nature, but once it saw me playing with my birds, it no longer tries to get to them. I dont know if dogs have that intellectual intelligence but it worked I guess...
It largely depends on what kind of puppy you have. I've grown up with hunting dogs (and have a golden now), and from my experience there is no way to train a bird dog not to want birds. Even if the dog learns to leave the birds alone, accidents can still happen. Quickly. With dire consequences to the birds. The best thing to do is make sure your dog knows the "leave it" command, and can be redirected when it pays too much attention to the birds. And always supervise any interaction between the two. If the puppy never has a chance to get in trouble, then you should be fine.
