Cockatiels reach sexual maturity at one year of age. I do not recommend breeding.
i know that cockatiels cant breed at 5 months but i meant around what month will be a good time for them to mate (dont they have a special season for mating?) (and will he be old enough)
I think I speak for the rest of the people here in that you should have more experience with cockatiels before you begin to breed them. A lot of things can go wrong in the process and you would risk harming your new pet, which I am sure you don't want to do. Tracy
Also Danoo94 you should't of wasted all that space with your posts. Speaking for everyone else, I assum, we'd would appreciate it if you didn't clog the board and just add all your questions to 1 or 2 posts. Thank you!
Cockatiels have no one particular breeding season, contrary to popular belief. They are always ready to breed, no matter the season. However, certain environmental factors can trigger mating behavior in cockatiels. In the wild, cockatiels have breeding seasons. The season differs for cockatiels in different areas of Australia. These seasonal breeding influences are not carried over to our domesticated friends. As I have said before, they reach sexual maturity at one year of age. Now, I really do not think you should breed your 'tiel. Since you have just purchased your friend, this is a critical time for you two to bond. The bird is establishing who its flock is, and since you are the only one there loving it, feeding it, and caring for it, you become your bird's flock and best friend. if you introduce another bird to the picture, things might not be so easy. Chances are that your bird will bond more strongly to the other bird and you will never have that special bond. However, if you wait and train your bird and establish yourself as part of its' flock...that bond can't be broken. As for breeding, it's a big responsibility. Making sure the breeding birds are healthy and making sure the babies are healthy is only half of the problem. Do you plan to keep the babies if they survive? If not, do you have people lined up to care for them? Are you prepared to pay for the vaccines that will ensure that these birds are healthy? You have some months to think about it.
