Heres my problem. When I put my Nesting box in the cage I was mainly thinking of the parent birds and the general safety of the box. But now I am about to come to the point where the babies are going to start venturing out of the nest. But there are no perches near by the nest box, beside the one sticking out of the box itself, and theres about a 3 foot drop to the bottom. We are planning to wait till the last egg is hatched, like tomorrow, then carefully take the nest box to the floor. Put some small short perches near by and lots of floor seed! Will that be alright to do? My cage is large and when I put the box in I didn't even think about the babies when they started coming out. Also we've ordered some breeding cages and when they come in my mother wants to take the parents and the babies with the nest box and move them to the new breeding cage. I am thinking not and only take the babies out to a nursery when they are winged. So the bird family has to only endure one move in the same cage. I would like some advise on this, as soon as possible, thanks.
OH!! I have a male 1 . . . . . Hummmm . . . . . well I think it would be fine, but I'm no bird breeder expert. I can say that in the wild they nest far up in trees like all birds . . . almost all. I would put the nesting box close to the bottom not all the way. Just for good mesure. But because I'm no expet I would look for some help on the web. Hope it helps!
Well Still looking this stuff up, my mom and I have been racking our minds trying to figure this out. But we kinda have. We are Not moving the family from one cage to another. We are not lowering the breeding box but we have added a 'catching try' filled with soft paper about 8 in below the nest, just in case a baby falls and added some closer smaller perches near the nest box as well. Hope all goes well! Thank you for your help. Merry Christmas!
That sounds good to me. Nice birds though-Budgies are pretty. At least they can't fall out of the nest, but keep an eye on them. You sound pretty responsible to me. Good luck and Merry Christmas!
what a wonderful idea putting a catch tray underneath. sometimes the answer is so simple. i don,t know that i would have thought of that. and how are the wee fledglings doing? well i hope since it has been a while. have fun and let me know the outcome please. bye. jen.
Well, all went wonderfully! After my last update upon getting the breeding cages we did move the parents and the babies into the new cage. Despite having the chase the dad around a turned off ceiling fan for a while. (Didn't have the net yet >_> The parents had no issues moving to a new cage, they even liked it better without the other two males. Out of the seven eggs 1 was infertile. But all the others are growing up nicely 2 of the six were sold. The parents started the 2nd clutch before the last baby of the last baby was out more than once. They had 6 eggs, the first one the mother threw out within the first day.( I had noticed it was oddly pinkish.) All 5 of those babies are growing and are even more healthy and active then the first clutch. (Which is common I hear.) We even moved the parents and the 2nd clutch recently to a safer place in the living room, same cage this time. Floors not so wabblely.
