I got a new parakeet yesterday around two p.m. from a local pet store. I tried to pick one that looked healthy. But it's been over twenty-four hours now, and my bird hasn't eat anything, and as far as I know, hasn't had any water. I'm getting very nervous about this, and I want to know if there's anything I can do to get her to eat or drink. Any help would be great!
When I got my bird Jerry she was very scared and didnt want to eat either. But I gave her some space and didnt try and force her and she eventually ate. When she/he gets hungry it will eat. Remember that you are introducing this bird to a new environment and it is terrified, so just make sure you make it a nice comfortable environment and it will loosen up in time. Good luck!
If you aren't sure if your bird is eating, check the bottom of the cage. If there are any droppings at all, it's either eating or drinking something. Birds quit processing waste very quickly after they stop eating. If there are droppings, look at them. They should have that nice two part feces/urine make up. However, if the bird actually isn't eating, then that's very serious. Birds can't go long without food and water. You might try tempting him/her with some nice treats. Millet, for example, is a hard one for a hungry parakeet to resist. That will at least get some food in him/her. If that doesn't work, a trip to your avian vet may be in order.
