HELP My Female cockatiel is all puffed up and is breathing real heavily. I don't know why. Plus there is no Avian vet in the area where I live. Is there any I could possibly do to help my cockatiel? My cockatiel is 3 years old.

Hi,

I think your bird may have a respriatory infection...you might go to walmart or a petshop and look for tetracycline capsules. They will be in the fish department...Ive used it for years, mix one tablet to 8 oz of water. and use it as primary drinking source...i dont know how long this was posted so i hope your bird is better. Also keep him warm, if you have to put a small lamp near his cage, not to close just enough to keep him warm...You might try putting a digital thermometer in his cage, for abit to keep track of temp. keep at about 80-85 degrees. This should help if it isnt too far gone...if possible i would call around to a vet and see if they have something such as tetracycline or similar you can give a bird...hope it helps Smile

well if there is no vet in your area...call others in surrounding areas...your best bet to keep your bird alive is to get her to a vet ASAP!!

I did everything I could to help my grey female cockatiel to get better. But sadly today in the late afternoon, my cockatiel died right in my hands. My other cockatiel looks to be heart broken after the loss of its friend.

I am very sorry about your tiel, once they get a respriatory infection you need to seek a vet...I have been handfeeding a baby tiel, and she keeps getting formula in her cere. It created a infection, i took her to a vet and she is getting meds for it. I strongly urge you to watch your other tiel. Maybe take him or her to vet to have check up. Its possible she or he can develope same thing...please dont take a chance...

definatly watch the other one and be ready to evacuate her if you have to. That could have been an infection of a toxic reaction. Birds are really suseptable to air born toxins. Things like scented candles and floor cleaner can be enough some times. If she was affected by something like this....then there is a chance it is still present. I would highly suggest having an avian vet perform a necropsy just to make sure...
