hey ive seen all the videos of people with there "trained" cockatiels but im wondering how many of those people get there cockatiels from different places
I have birds from all three places. Not really by choice since I'm a foster parent. Petsmart and Petco are good places because the birds are usually healthy and inspected by an avian vet so you have to worry less about diseases. How well the bird is trained will vary from store to store. That leaves you to asking questions and messing with the birds before you buy. Breeders are good, but I'd get references. I've seen shady breeders and fantastic breeders. If you buy a bird from a breeder, I highly recommend these folks. http://www.wholesalebirdandcagellc.com/ I just went to a bird show the other week and I was highly impressed.

Hey, you're very welcome. I've commented on the wings and the spray on the other thread. My first bird was a cockatiel. This was my first purchased bird. I had been in college for 8 years and specializing in avain care and surgery for 2, so I chose to be a foster parent for displaced birds. I did this all through college...training them and socializing them. Anyway, I purchased my cockatiel 4 years ago from Petsmart for like 100$. He was great and already knew how to step up. He is a normal grey named Chicken. I also have a Congo African Grey that I just purchased from a breeder and he is named Hollywood. He was 975$. A bit cheaper since I purchased him in May. I have a Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo named Goose and he was given to me as a baby from a breeder. They usually go for 500$ or so, I hear. I also have Lady Gouldian finches that my husband bought from Petco and they were...200$ or 300$ a piece. I'm not sure. I was given an Umbrella Cockatoo from a collegue because the bird attacks people and sends them to the hospital. However, I formed a pretty special bond with him and he is doing well now. His name is Baby Bird. Umbrellas go for about 1000 to 2000$. I have been fostering quite a few birds, and many have found homes...a few haven't. Among the fosters I have a Hyacinth Macaw named Chuck (he goes for about 10,000$ from breeders), a green-winged macaw named Lady (about 5,000$), an Eclectus parrot named Sydney (about 2,000$-5,000$), and 3 cockatiels (a pied, a lutino, and an albino) named French Fry, Diva, and Casper. My 6 birds stay at my home, and my fosters stay at the clinic and in my outside aviary. What I've learned from all of them is that parrots are a huge commitment. I've made a lifetime commitment to my african grey and my two 'toos. Most people are not ready to make that commitment, and that's why I end up with so many of them. Parrots are pretty expensive and you would think that people would take them more seriously as a pet since they are so expensive, but this isn't the case. I think many people get them as "novelty birds" and fail to meet the social needs of the bird. The prices I put up of what a bird goes for probably varies from breeder to breeder and season to season. I would not recommend buying a larger parrot from a pet store. It's just my opinion. The larger birds that I have purchased are from breeders and they are fantastic.
