Hi, I just bought my first parakeet three days ago. I have her in a nice cage with toys, a mirror and plenty of food/ water changed daily. I have been getting her used to the cage and my house and know about slowly training them to perch on a finger and all that. I play her music when I am gone and when I am in the room. I would like to teach her to mimic someday, but I am worried because since I bought her, I have not heard a single peep out of her. Is this normal?? I know she is still scared and adjusting - but shouldn't she make some noise? If anyone could answer my question, thank you!
I had a parakeet and when I first got her, she was quiet when I first got her, but she then peeped a little, then more, and more, and soon, she wouldn't be quiet. The behavior you're observing is completely normal, so don't worry. Just so you know, it will take what feels like forever just to get your bird to learn one word, and it should be about two or three sillables. If it's one, it's too short to understand, but if it's four or up, it will be too long to follow. Enjoy your new friend!
