Myth # 1: The absurd notion that YOU NEED TO EAT MEAT TO GET ENOUGH PROTIEN!

If that were true, why do vegetarians outlive meat-eaters, and why do we live in so much better health?

A study of Seventh-Day Adventists showed that those who followed a vegetarian diet outlived their meat-eating cohorts by some 13 years. In study after study, longevity just seems to be something that vegetarians and vegans are better at than meat eaters. Surely if we vegetarians and vegans suffered a lack of protein, the macronutrient indispensable for building muscle and tissue, it would catch up with us after a bit, wouldn’t it? After all, the human body cannot store protein, so we vegans are clearly not living on reserves. The fact is that we’re feeding ourselves more than sufficient protein every day.

Plant-eating animals such as gorillas, elephants, horses, and giraffes all clearly obtain enough protein to support massive frames. Why in the world do we imagine that humans cannot build strong bones without eating cheeseburgers? (MEDIA)

On a healthy vegan diet, protein is simply not an issue. You don’t have to worry about balancing you proteins, or getting “complete” proteins; you don’t have to pay any particular attention to protein at all. All you have to do is eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes (at least until you learn to relax). Eat a variety of beans, soy products such as tofu and tempeh, peas, and lentils. Vegan substitute “meats” such as tofu, tempeh, seitan, as well as vegan hot dogs and other soy- and wheat-based “meats” are loaded with protein, in amounts (grams per serving) comparable to meat, but without the saturated fat and cholesterol. Broccoli and leafy green vegetables boast respectable protein content as well. Nuts and seeds are also rich in protein.
Now I ask you, do you know of anyone who has gotten sick, gone to the hospital, or died from lack of protein? I’m quite sure that you don’t, whereas I’ll bet you know plenty of people who have become victims of heart disease and cancer. It’s remarkable how many people dig their graves with artery-destroying, fatty, carcinogenic animal foods because they are afraid of a condition that scarcely can be found anywhere in America: protein deficiency.

That sounds right to me - I know that eggs are a higher quality protein than meat - that is the body is able to absorb higher levels of protein from eggs than meat.
What would you suggest to get me going in that direction - with all that is going on in the news about bird flu(effects chicken)and now mad cow is in the States - it sounds like it is dangerous being a meat eater.
I have Oatmeal for breakfast mixed with raisins and walnuts sprinkled with cinnamon(Good Stuff) - do you have any ideas or any websites or books that I can go to for recipe ideas?
Thank You - Smile

Stuffed Eggplant
(2 servings)
1 large eggplant
½ onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup buckwheat
½ cut (freshly) chopped parsley
Bragg Liquid Aminos to taste
(Freshly) ground black pepper to taste
½ teaspoon sweet paprika powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease baking dish
(By the way, I suggest using a buttery spread called Earth Balance. Non-GMO, non-hydrated, 100% expeller-pressed oils & 100% natural & Vegan- & NO CARBS!)
Cut the eggplant in half, lengthwise. Scoop out some of the soft flesh of the inside.
Sauté the onion with the minced garlic in the olive oil. Mix in the cooked buckwheat and the parsley.
Season with the Bragg Liquid Aminos, black pepper, sweet paprika powder, and garlic powder.
Stuff the eggplant halves with the mixture & place them in the prepared baking dish. Cover the dish, place in the oven, and bake for 40-45 minutes.

Margaritas: A LOT of freshly squeezed limes, splenda (or any fake sugar you prefer), Tequila, and Orange Triple-Sec. I love to blend together with ice so fine that it has a liquid-like sorbet or ice cream texture.

Grilled Portobello Mushrooms
(2 servings)
2 tablespoons olive oil
¾ tablespoon Bragg Liquid Aminos
1 ½ tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 medium to large Portobello mushrooms w/o stems, washed
2 cloves garlic, mixed

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Mix the olive oil, Bragg Liquid Aminos, and balsamic vinegar. Brush the mushrooms on both sides with the mixture and place them upside down on a slightly oiled baking sheet.
Scatter the minced garlic on top, place in oven, and bake for about 10 minutes.

SALSA
10 Roma tomatoes, seeded, small dice (2 cups)
1 small red onion, small dice (1 cup)
2 to 3 small green onions, chopped (1/2 cup)
2 medium jalapeno peppers, seeded and finely chopped (2 tablespoons), or to taste
6 Serrano chili peppers, seeded and finely chopped (1/2 cup), or to taste
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro (loosely packed)
3 large cloves garlic, crushed and minced (1 tablespoon)
15 ounce can tomato sauce
4 teaspoons Border Bandito's Salsa Spice Blend
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

GUACAMOLE -
2 ripe avocados
½ red onion, minced (about 1/2 cup)
1-2 Serrano chilies, stems and seeds removed, minced
2 tablespoons cilantro leaves, finely chopped
1 tablespoon of fresh lime or lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
A dash of freshly grated black pepper
1/2 ripe tomato, seeds and pulp removed, chopped

BURRITOS- get creative- add anything you want! I lay out all the ingredients on a table so that my guests can make their own burrito so that they have fun & get exactly what they want. There’s always a substitute for animal products, such as cheese and meat.
Suggestions:
Whole grain burrito wraps- any brand that’s low on the carbs Wink
Chopped lettuce
Chopped scallions
Chopped onions
Diced tomatoes
Salsa
Tofutti brand Better than Sour Cream
1 bag recipe crumbles (fake hamburger), Morningstar Farms or Green Giant brand.
1 packet taco seasoning
Guacamole
Peppers

Just FYI, I STRONGLY suggest you try Morningstar Farms chicken (vegetarian). Put it on a skillet and you won’t regret it!

¡Ahora comience el partido!

D-force-1,
Sorry I got carried away with my fiesta ideas. Of course there are many healthier/organic/vegetarian internet sites that I use & highly recommend:

1. http://www.vegan-food.net/ has a wide variety of foods. Many recipes are “low carb” friendly & for the one’s that are not, you can always substitute things (LC bread, fake sugar instead of the real stuff, etc.)

2. http://www.rawveg.info/- GREAT site! Predominately all LC, too. VERY healthy.

3. http://www.gojuvo.com/- Vegan, low-carb, INTERESTING, all healthy. Best diet anyone could do- filled with nutrition

4. http://www.veganwolf.com/vegan_recipes.htm- also a site for vegans against animal abuse, but great recipes for LC people, too.

5. http://www.veganvillage.co.uk/recipes.htm-yummy!

6. http://www.vitalita.com/cookbooks.html- very nice site

7. http://www.vegsource.com/- great source for health in general & has a few recipes

8. http://www.veganchef.com/- LOTS of great stuff

9.http://www.newcreations.net/kco/diet/recipes/veganindex.html- nice, light, & easy recipes

10. http://vegweb.com/- Great for people leaning towards a healthy & vegetarian lifestyle. Even for those who aren’t, it’s a good one, too.

11. http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/- great recipes w/ all the facts

12. http://www.uncaged.co.uk/recipes.htm- very interesting. European site against eating animals, but still has great recipes to offer.

13. http://www.living-foods.com/recipes/- raw-food based. Very healthy, too

I have more, but check these out- especially the raw food ones. They offer great ready-to-go snacks that are low-carb & very good for you. I hope this helps Smile

Awesome. How was it? I love to put a little of it to the side (pico de gallo) & put it in the Guacamole. I love diced tomatoes with Avocados Razz

Oddly enough, your raised-for-slaughtor cows, pigs, and chickens are even killing our fish. Waste and runoff from factory farms make our nation's waterways nutrient-rich, leading to algae blooms that suck the oxygen from the water. The Los Angeles Times reports that nearly three hundred waterways in California "have been declared unfit for aquatic life or recreation because of excessive nutrients." Chocked by the lack of oxygen, dead fish in waters all over our blessed nation often wind up floating ashore, sometimes by the millions. Pesticides, nitrogen, phosphorous, and ammonia from farming operations are also invariably poisonous to aquatic life. Yes, human sewage also contributes to the problem, as do the oil spilkls that have repeatedly poisoned the abundant fish supplies of Alaskan waters. But 94% of the nitrogen in our waters comes from livestock and farms. We will not have clean water in America unless we put an end to factory farming.

The dr.ted.diet I am on calls for
4oz veal or chicken or LondonBroil beef
(certain fish)
as much vegies as I want as long as they are not tuberous, cant mix lettuce with tomatoes.
fruits, just apples oranges or berries. melba toast.

And thats it.

My problem is that I am getting sick of chicken, veal, londonbroil.

What does getting enough protein have to do with longevity? If what you say is true, it is probably due to the low cholesterol, sodium and saturated fat consumption which all lead to heart disease which is the number one killer in America.

so waht is your point? you just felt the need to come on a low carb forum where most of us consume a lot of meat to tell us how you are better because your a vegan? i like to follow the natural order of nature....which means as the top of the food chain, i proudly eat meat.

did you also read the proven studies about how if everyone was a vegan, the world would suffer huge problems due to an over population of animals that would take over and instead of being used for a honorable purpose of feeding us, they would have to be systematically shot and killed ...for no purpose at all. just shot , burnt and left to rot.

if you want to be a vegan..great. but dont come on here or anywhere else shoving your lifestyle down someone else's throat. your not different than the jesus freaks, jahova witness's, highly judgemental cults etc etc etc.

you can express your opinions in a less "shove down your throat my lifestyle" way.

btw a moderate amount of sat fat is very healthy an dhelps to lower ls. levels in the heart and maintain good cholestoral..its when people eat mcdonalds that they become unhealthy.

i love hwo you research the facts that benefit you..but not the ones that dont.

im going to go eat some meat.
