Merlin never did use a crystal ball for all his abilities; that's all Hollywood, imo. He used madness or whatever reflective surface he can find (water, mirrors, etc) to commune with the Otherworld to give him future knowledge. The latter is suggestive of his celtic origins and there may have been more than one Merlin because not all the early texts agree with one another.

I like the hollywwod version.
In the other(truth) he was a madman born of demons.
