I have decided to get a dog of the great breed Pomeranian!! yay!! I know about the breed and love the breed, but before I get one I would like to hear from everyone who knows the breed, has or had them, or just has stories. I would appreciate hearing from the pet owners on here so I dont make a mistake in getting the wrong dog. I have decided on this breed after doing research on many breeds throughtout these past years of wanting a dog. I'd appreciate hearing from you thanks!

Poms are really funny good choice they will protect you but still be friendly. My pomeranian is so funny he was chewing my finger and fell asleep this was his first night here though lol so he is a charactar.

thanks, but I'm thinking maybe a pom might be the wrong choice because of their grooming. I guess I could just take it to the groomers every month and set aside at least 20 minutes a day for brushing. I want to show it so I cant get its hair shaved or clipped short, but if it gets to be too much I'll risk showing it, after all its going to be more of a walking partner and companion. I would still like to hear from Pom owners!

If you're planning to show, be sure to find a breeder that's willing to be your mentor. You're going to have to learn a lot about grooming if you're going to be showing a pom. Personally, I would be afraid to go towards a dog that needs a bunch of grooming to be my first show dog (this is your's, right?).
I don't have much information on Pomeranians, but I do know a little about showing (was going to show my beagle, but she didn't turn out right). Another thing to look for is for a retired show dog that a breeder is looking to rehome. You could use it as a specials dog, learn the ins and outs of showing, and not have to train a puppy how to show at the same time.

Thanks erl1391, I have decided that I'm not going to show unless my pup turns out to be absolutely gorgeous and way show quality. I'm just going to focus on it being my best friend and being a member of the family.
I just went and picked my pup up from a breeder who lives on the next court over from me and its such a sweetie pie.

  • I picked this lady because she lives very close and is breeding to the standard, not toy poms or teacups.
  • She really is a very responsible pet owner and breeder(not byb).
  • All her dogs and puppies are akc registered and have had as much shots as they can and are all spayed/neutured before they go.(The only reason mine wasnt spayed is because there is a possiblity of me showing her but if not I have to get her fixed)
  • Plus if any buyer wants to show their dog,Mrs.Kelen(the breeder), must show it that way she is sure the dogs show quality and it is going to be shown; that the buyers aren't lying that they will show it just so they can have a intact dog.
  • She doesnt sell to kennels but to select breeders who arent kennels.
  • She also does house checks before the puppy is sold, she doesnt ship puppies, she registers the puppies with akc, she has a 5 page application to fill out before you purchase a puppy, she provides a lifetime warrantee on every puppy for health and if the puppy/dog cant be kept she'll take it back at no cost.

So basically this is what I would call a great, caring, responsible, respectible breeder who provides healthy, stable, great tempered, adorable puppies to the right homes. She actually talks about adopting a dog/puppy to every person before they even look at the puppies to just let them know how many great dogs are in the shelters who get put down. She also doesnt breed her dogs after age 5. From this lady I got an adorable fluffy female pom puppy. I'll take pictures soon to show everyone.

What type of health testing did she do, and are the parents titled? These are really what determine if the breeder is reputable or not. I find it rather weird that she doesn't have a waiting list and you've already been able to get a puppy.
Anyways, can't wait to see pics- I bet she's adorable. What have you named her?

The breeder of my show pap is actually co-owner. She has all of the breeding rights. And I actually think that when his puppies are sold, we get part of the money. Then again, I'm not sure.

erl1391, she doesn't have a waiting list because she doesn't advertise greatly, she doesn't have a web site or any ads in dog books or breeder classifeids. For health testing she has done all the tests for what poms are known for getting, and the parents are titled. And the first thing I did is take my pup to my vet before I even took her home and had them do tests and check her over. They did a parvo test because she was showing signs of parvo... and she has it... Frown I am so scared for her right now but they said she'll most likely make it because she is very healthy other than that and the parvo isnt very far along. I called the breeder and told her and she apoligized and thanked me for being responsible and taking her to the vet first thing because it might of been to late when I found out later on. She then started crying and was trying to think of how she could of got it because she had all her shots up to date and hadn't gone anywhere. She then said that it could of been tracked in her house by a buyer who had it on their shoes so she's bleaching everything and making sure nobody else has it and to prevent it she's making everyone leave their shoes off in before coming in the house. She promised that she will give me back my $1,500 for my pup and that she will give me pick of the litter on the litter born shortly after my pups litter once their 9 weeks nomatter if my pup survives or passes on. The vets said that she has a VERY GOOD chance of surviving, a 90% chance. I cant lose her, I've already grown too attached. Is there anything I should do? BTW, I havent named her yet.

update!!!:
I jsut got off the phone from the vet and they said she is doing a lot better since she's being treated. She is perkier now, will drink little bits of water, and is taking an interest in her puppy food. They gave her some iv fluids and she's better. They said I could come pick her up tonight but I want to let them keep her and monitor her over night. I will go see her tomorrow morning along with her breeder. I got my money back from the breeder for her and she said that in 2 days the puppies will be 9 weeks for me to pick one out for my free puppy as the contract said that "if a puppy gets very sick or dies with something health related it will be with replaced with another free". I don't know quite yet if I'll get one from this litter. Do you think having another puppy around will help her once she gets home?

I'm so sorry to hear about the parvo. My pointer had it as a pup, so I know the feeling. But my vet didn't give us a 90% chance of survival. She did survive, no long lasting effects- but you have to bleach EVERYTHING she has touched or she may get it again. Parvo can live in the soil for years, so if she's been in your yard you need to bleach it. Pick up any wastes as well. The vet will probably tell you to keep her away from other dogs and keep her out of public for a few months as well- so I definitely wouldn't take another puppy at this time. Another problem with getting another puppy is that you will have bonding issues. Ask any trainer and they'll tell you not to do it. I'm surprised that your breeder has offered you another puppy already- reputable breeders would want you to keep your attention on one pup at a time.
Also, puppies aren't fully protected until they've finished their puppy vaccines- at around 12 weeks. Do not take a puppy out in public until they have finished their puppy series.
Again, I'm sorry to hear about the parvo- but I'm sure she'll survive. She sure is a cutie.

Thank you, my puppy hasn't even been at my house yet so my house is good and clean from it. I was suprised to about her asking me about another puppy but it was because in the contract they say that they will provide another puppy if something goes wrong, like a lot of breeders will do. I told the breeder that no I don't want another puppy and that I'm getting mine spayed and she should seriously pay more attention to what is happening with these puppies and that she be a better breeder. No, she's not a complete reputable breeder but she is close only if would just monitor a little more of how the puppies are acting. She's just lucky that someone like me who is smart enough, cares a lot, and is responsible got this puppy who has it. Yes she is registered and passes all her tests to be a running breeder of dogs but that doesn't give her the excuse to pass up how this puppy acts and how it feels and looks. I asked her for some numbers to previous buyers and they all said that wouldnt ever buy from her again because their pups either were malnourished, had parvo, or were just not taken care of properly. I regret getting a puppy from her because it had to go through this but I'm happy that I have this bundle of joy. I just am happy that I am the one who got her and not some fool who wouldn't care about her and let her suffer. I still cant pick out a name for her!!! OOO ya, she is 10 weeks old and is a light orange color almost creme. She will be 4lbs. full grown and has Chriscendo and Great Elms blood in her.

Also what I found out on the phone call that I just ended about 2 seconds ago is that this puppy is not from this breeder. It came from a breeder in South Carolina who is retiring and sent out puppies to different pom breeders to sell for her. She didn't tell me at the time of purchase but just now. The puppy got the parvo on the way over here to my state most likely, but still all those owners I talked to had problems with puppies from this breeder who I purchased the puppy from(the one who didn't originally breed and whelp it). So the pup I got is from a better breeder than this lady who sells unfit puppies. I feel bad for all the owners who fell into her trap. Im actually glad to hear this news because I know that I didn't get my pup from this joke-of-a-breeder. My puppy will come home tomorrow morning and will be cared for and will never have to be mistreated again.
