AKC performance events are for purebreds only, since the AKC is a registry for the promotion of purebred dogs.
Mixed breed dogs would surely enjoy it too. Someone should get busy and start forming groups dedicated to mixed breeds in Agility and even Obedience competition. I'll bet a lot of mixed breed owners would like to have the opportunity to try it.
I thought I saw something once about 4H groups having Agility training. Has anyone else heard anything about 4H and agility?
AKC, as well as CKC do not allow mixed breeds in performince events because of the possibility of people promiting their "cockapoos" "labradoodles" and other designer mutts.
However, there are several organisations that allow mixed breeds to compete. NADAC (The North American Dog Agility Council), USDAA (United States Dog Agility Association), and AAC (Agility Association of Canada) all allow any dog in competition.
Top dogs (aired on animal planet Canada, I'm not sure about the USA) airs many agility competitions for NADAC and the AAC. Lots of fun to watch and you see purebreds and mutts alike.
For all the associations, I prefur NADAC. They tend to be a little safer... for example the A frames are a bit shorter and if a tire jump is used it must be break away (so if a dog hits it, it will come apart rather than injuring the dog).
I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR JACK RUSSLE STANDERDS I NEVER LIKED THE AKC ANYWAY. THEY SAY THEY LOVE DOGS BUT MUTTS ARE DOGS TO .JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO PEDIGREE PAPERS TO SHOW OR FANCE RIBBONS. THEY ARE STILL DOGS AND CAN DO THE SAME AND THEN BETTER THAN PUREBREDS
The AKC is not about "my purebred dog is better than your mutt". They are about preserving ancient dog breeds that have serviced us in our history. To do this, we must register purebreds to make sure they stay pure.
I have never met a purebred dog owner or breeder who does not like mutts. In fact, many of us do our share in volunteering in rescue groups and shelters, or donating money to low-cost spay/netuer programs.
However, we do not support those breeding mutts and selling them for thousands of dollars and this is why we only allow purebreds at our events. People breeding mutts should not be advertising to the public that they are reputable and to do this we unfortunatally have to exclude all mutts.
Thank you for explaining that out pudelgirl. I love purebreds and they are just as great as mutts, they are both dogs and there is no difference between them like you said. Mutts are definatly not better than purebreds though. And what's wrong with getting awards and ribbons?
Has anyone watched the purina incredible dog challenge? They have mutts. Mutts can compete in agility just not AKC events. And it should be kept that way. I don't see why so many people hate the AKC. They do loves dogs and are comitted to responsible breeding because they provide events as a basis on how well the dog fits the breed standard. And 4-H does have agility programs but to be in 4-H you have to be under 18 unless you want to be a leader or something like that. And not all have agility programs but it's getting more popular.
Ever seen the JRT races on the Incredible Dog Chalenge? That's what Arguss does at JRTCA trials! It's hilarious to see all those little white streaks of lightning speed through the tunnel. Sometime they all ram into the hay bales insted of going through the hole one at a time! He also does some agility when we go as well and that's really fun for him too.
i never said i didn't like purebreds i just like rescued dogs the best. and the purebreds in the pound don't have the papers and registration that you need to be in the akc agility if your dog is a loved trained dog that likes to do agility-let them
I heard from an agility trainer that mixed breeds are allowed to compete in UKC... is that correct? I train my lab/golden mix in agility... just for fun, though.
I'd never actually read that site before but filled out the form and sent six picutres rather than the required two. That's OK my dog is handsome! I'd thought they could compete in anything but conformation but then never had interests in something forbidden.
My vet isn't crazy about jumping, particularly if the dog hasn't been X-Rayed and also for ACL tears. I'm a little paranoid so we tend to keep our fun fairly low to the ground.
I strongly feel that mixed bred dogs should be allowed to compete. It seems a little racist. I like both.
