Hi! I'm new to this board and have a semi serious question to ask.

I'm 17 (almost 18), i have a place already lined for me & one of my coworkers early next summer. Its a nice place (3 bedrooms & 2 baths), enough backyard to run around her animals. She has a doberman (which is semi disbled due to horrible ears) and some type of pointer.

My question is, does anyone have any dog breed suggestions for me? I doubt it would be crowded for all of us, and we both work at a Animal Hospital (me=next vet) so it would be easy access for a dog to get help. I would prefer a larger dog (lab being the biggest), because I have been attacked by way way too many small dogs in the past. Plus small dogs are really annoying to me.lol.

I have allergies, so a short haired dog would work best, and preferrably not have to run with the dog on a daily basis.

P.S...NO Terriers! Roll Eyes

Have you looked on www.petfinder.com?

All the dogs listed on here are shelter and rescue dogs that really need homes. They have pictures and biographies of the dogs, and state if they have special needs, if they like other dogs, etc. They are also usually all up to date on their shots and are speutered.

You can search by size and breed as well.

Check it out, you might find a dog that really intrests you!

Sounds like a shelter rescue would fit right in!

Keep in mind that circumstances can change quickly at your age. If you should have to move, it may be difficult finding a place with three large dogs to care for.

Well it would have to fit in with your other dogs first, try rescues mabe a lab or lab mix.

Thanks to you all. I guess my only concern with a shelter pet, is if it would work well with the other two dogs.
I was thinking of just fostering animals for the shelter, because that would be nice as well.

i agree with big54bob...

poodle/ poodle mix would be perfect because they are known to be hypoallergenic.

Try www.petfinder.com (my family found our dog there)
AND
try the dog breed selector on www.animalplanet.com that way, you can have an idea of a good dog for you.
(I just did a quick dog breed selector on this site... with the information you gave.)
The top 4 dogs were:
Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Canaan Dog
Greater Swiss Mountain Dog- may be larger than you are looking for.

Hopefully, this isnt too late. Hope this helps!

This is another breed search engine. Not sure if you're still checking back here. This one's a lot more in detail than animal planet's.

I think a Greyhound would be great. There is one 20 year old college student who lives in an apartment with 2 Greyhounds. People expect them to be very active and hyper because they were once racing dogs, but they are the opposite they are HUGE couch potatoes! But also know how to have fun. Since you have a fenced in back yard that would be great if they need to release the little bit of energy they have occasionally. They require little exercise and grooming.

Since you have allergies they would also be great because they have hair instead of fur and they don't even shed!!! Oh I forgot to include that most of them don't even bark! And you don't have to potty train them like you would a puppy.

One thing I loved is that you are rescuing them - because after their retired and done racing they are killed or dropped off out in the middle of no where not knowing what the hell is going on. I love these dogs they are the most affectionate dogs! I will always stick with this breed!!

A poddle is a good dog to get. My friend had allergies, so he got a poodle because they don't shed hair. If you don't like the idea of a poodle get a dog that does not shed hair. You also said that your friends have dogs just make sure the dog that you get gets a long with them.
