I'm pretty fond of the Chinese Crested Dog. I used to think they were ugly, but after being around my friend's for a while, they start looking more and more like a tiny horse with a lion's mane. Seeing one act affectionate and playful is different than seeing pictures, or watching them on a dog show, I guess.
By the way, mypoundpup, you are much more likely to find a larger breed dog at a shelter.

As far as I'm concerned there is no best small breed dog, however if you look hard enough theres one to suit every person. I'm personally involved in miniature poodles, they are high in energy, very easy to train, and quick to form bonds with their human partner. However, they also require a lot of grooming (which is great for me, I love doing it, but most don't) and are a constant victom of back yard breeders and puppy millers. As well, they often don't do well around small children, this is not because they are agressive, but because they are built fairly lightly and cold easily be hurt.

I have also been researching for a small breed that would fit with my lifestyle. After tons of research I have narrowed it down to Boston Terriers.
They are very lively but don't require a lot of exercise. They have minimal grooming requirements and love people. The are very intelligent and do well in canine sports. They are also good with other pets and larger dogs as long as the other dog isn't aggresive.
They are a wonderful breed for an owner that fits. I also like Cavalier king charles spaniels but Boston Terriers fit me a little better.

As a former grooming shop owner be aware some of these small dogs have extensive grooming requirements. Not only visits to a shop, but the home care needed.
Generally the longer and thicker the coat, the more work that is needed. Some folks love to brush and pamper their pooches. For them any small breed will do. Other prefer "wash and wear" dogs. That is me. I do not like to do much home coat care. I have always had short coated breeds.
Pick the breed that tickles your fancy. But keep the grooming requirement in mind. Good luck!

on the grooming. I have a Pom and in order to keep her from matting in between beauty parlor visits [ ] I brush her several times a week. However I don't mind the work and enjoy keeping her pretty. Who wants to cuddle a dog full of mats? Yuck. She seems to enjoy it too and usually goes to sleep

Dachshunds!!! Thay are known for their terrier tenacity but make a very loyal and loving family pet. They can be reserved and defensive if strangers enter their domain. They are very alert and have a powerful and frequent bark when guarding. Miniature Dachshunds make excellent lap dogs.Thay are a brill small dog as a pet!! AND CUTE!!

You can keep a Lhasa or a Shih Tzu at any length you please. The hair is kinda like human hair so the only catch is to keep them short they have to get regular hair cuts.

If you don't want much grooming, I'd go for a boston terrier, pug, JRT,or Italian greyhound.

I think it's best to get the breed that fits you the best. If you are going to get a long hair breed you shouldn't always rely on trimming. If you don't enjoy grooming don't get a Shi Tzu.
My decision on whether to get a Boston Terrier or a Cavalier king charles spaniel was decided by grooming needs. I'd rather have a breed that needs minimal grooming.
