When I bought my purebred GSP I had a good idea of what kind of dog I was getting. I refered to a breed standard as developed by AKC. I knew I was getting a relatively large dog. I knew I was getting a very active dog. I knew what the approximate height and weight would be. Her temprament was not a mystery either.

My question for you, Laura, What is the breed standard for a Maltipoo? Tell me what is the expected temprament of your breed(term used very loosly). How much will your dog weigh as an adult? Is your Maltipoo going to be fine around cats, dogs, or children? What climatic conditions will best suit your dog?

If you can not answer these simple questions, then you are buying a mutt, plain and simple.

Pudlegrl can tell you the exact specifications of a poodle.

Russlesrule can tell you exactly what a JRT is and is not.

Cloverwoof can acuratly decribe what to expect from a Boston Terrier.

Laura the only thing that you can expect from buying a "designer dog" is the continued exploitaion of dogs by unscrupulous people.

PLEASE DON"T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to say this but your being extremely..SELFISH!! Red Face Your only thinking about yourself getting a new cuddly puppy(that'll probably come with loads of genetic difects and health problems),you just want this dog so much your willing to make MANY others suffer badly then die a painful death.Your in denial that what you want to do is very wrong so your gonna stop listening?

Please please please get a purebred Maltese from a reputable breeder or rescue one from the maltese rescue who's in need of a home. Or even go to your local shelter and give a needy dog a home-

You guys im very sorry i was hardheaded can you ever forgive me . Ive checked out the rescues in my are and there arent any young pure bred maltese ,and i just might like to show someday but i doubt that Ya i would be waisting my money on a mutt ,But now i feel bad that they need homes also .

Now all i need to do is find a good breeder who wont charge me more than 600 dollars i started out at 300 but now i know i cant find a reprutable breeder who charges less than 600 .

Well ,Thank you all for not giving up

One good breed that is known to get along with other dogs that is a toy is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They're very sweet family dogs. While they are expensive sometimes, if you can find a reputable breeder for less or one at a shelter. Hope this helps ^_^

I am also sorry if I came across as sounding mean.

I know how waiting to get a new dog is not fun. Be patient. You never know when the perfect dog will turn up.

My GSP cost less than ususal. I was looking for one when a friend introduced me to a breeder he knew. One of his dogs had a litter of fourteen. Because I was a friend of a friend, he gave me a price break.

Sometimes breeders sell some puppies that are not quite up to standard at a reduced price. I am not talking about dogs with a major deformaity or illness. It could be a dog slightly off size. Or a marking or color that is wrong for the breed. Everything else with these dogs is normal. Of course these dogs come with the stipulation that it is nuetered and never to be bred.

Just don't give up. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

you also have to keep in mind that you HAVE an eski, you need to make sure that not only he/she is going to get along with another dog but the dog is going to get along with the eski.
i dont know much about malts or eskies but make sure the personalities match.
if your looking to adopt make sure you introduce the dogs before adopting but do it on NEUTRAL ground and try to have a few meetings to see how they react, and rember an older well established dog might not like having a new baby in the house.
if your looking to buy from a breeder, mabe that breeder has an older puppy they were planning to breed or show but the puppy hasnt developed the correct qualities, these pups are still wellbred and would usually be sold for less.
just make sure if your doing that that the breeder socializes the dogs extreemly well from a very young age.
hope this helps, you can do alot of reaserch into all the breeds on the akc website and other breed based webpages.

the problem most people have with things like maltipoos and other dogs as such is these dogs are going for thousands of dollars sometimes, and these dogs are not papered and breeding these dogs is contributing to the overpopulation, alot of these mixes can combine any health problmes of each breed into one package.
seems poodles, and chihuahuas are the favorites to use as bases for 'desighner' dogs. be very wary of anyone charging more money for a somthing-poo....or a chi-somthing or other.

To find a rescue org, just go to google and type in Maltese rescue. There is an entire page of various rescue's that only deal with, or specialize in maltese.
If cost is such an issue, I really would hesitate to recommend you getting another dog. In only the first few months that I got my puppy, I spent about $500. I have the copies of the bills and I'll lay it out to you.

July 04
Visit = $33
DHLPP:Annual = $16
Lyme Vac (1 of 2) = $23
Interceptor (6 month)= $22 (buy this elsewhere afterwards)
Frontline (6month) = $69 (same goes for this)
Total = $164

Aug. 04
Exam - $28
Lyme vaccine = $23
Kennel cough vac. = $22
cefa drops = $18
Malax syrup = $30
Total = 111.52
(those last 2 were b/c of concerns with reverse sneezing, seems to be common in certain small breeds)

Sept. 04
Neuter = $156 (laser procedure)
Extraction (2 teeth) = $18
Microchip = 42
Total = $234

Now these prices may seem high, but they vary depending on location. I know a lot of pet stores host clinics for basic shots at times which can cut costs down some but it's still things that need to be taken care of.
Another Papillon owner I know is currently having patella problems with her first Pap she bought. She has had surgery done twice so far, costing over $2,000 including therapy she's needed to do as well. I know most people cannot afford huge costs like these, but if you're at the point where you buy Ol' Roy dog food for your dogs because you can't afford a decent dog food, perhaps you should consider a hamster.

My friend(before I moved back to Marksville) had his welsh corgi, Maximus, on Old Roy dog food. That dog would throw up constantly, was obese, had extremly disgusting stool and a lot of it, and had horrible food allergies. I finally said enough and got him to buy his dog Nutro brand dog food. There was a huge improvement after that. Old Roy is an extremly cheap dog food and should probably be recalled along with Kibbles N' Bits and Alpo. Those are the WORST.

I orginally had my dogs on Nutro. Then I switched them over to the raw diet. Then after hearing about the risks of the certain type of raw meat I had to use, I got them on a higher quality Nutro, Nutro Natural Choise Ultra wet food, with calcium and phosphorus supplements.

Ol Roy dog food is full of low quality ingredients that are not nessiarily healthy for your dog. The proteins used are not digestible (meaning more has to be fed, and theres more poop for you), it's vitamins and minerals are not chelated (chelation protects them so they can be fully used when digested), it uses artificial preservatives (BHA is linked to Cancer), it uses meat rather than a named source (meat can actually mean euthanized dogs and cats, certain batches of Ol Roy have contained high amounts of pentobarbital, a euthanisia drug), and so on. When I choose a dog food, I look for the following

-The first ingredient is a named meat meat. For example chicken meal or turkey meal. Dog's use meat protein the best (for example, chicken meal the dog will use 96% of it, they will only use approximatly 40% of soy or corn... what does this mean? You will have to feed much more soy to get the same amount of nutrition AND less poop to scoop)
-There is a quality carbohydrate source (I tend to avoid wheat and corn because dogs are often sensative to them. Millet, Barley, Rice, Amaranth etc... are far superior)
-Vitamins and minerals added are either Chelated or Holistic (from fruit, vegies, and meat etc...)
-Preserved with mixed Tocopherols (A tocopherol is a combination of Vitamin C, vitamin E and rosemary extract)
Added Omega 3 fatty acides, they help the skin, coat, circulation, heart function etc.. (examples are fish, canola, flax, safflour, and hemp).

Brands I recomend
-Innova
-California Natural
-Wellness
-Solid Gold
-Canidae

Not only will your dog be healthier, but there will be less poop to scoop and you will actually be spending less money. Since the dog doesn't have to eat as much a large bag will last him much longer.

This is the food I feed my dogs, what do you think?;

www.nutroproducts.com/ncuad.asp

The FDA recently stated that there are many bacterial contaminations in raw foods. It also puts your pet at risk for dental and gastrointestinal injuries from bone and other hard substances. The FDA finds no scientific evidence that raw diets are better than commerical dog food diets. That's why I got my dogs off the raw diet.

Nutro is what I would consider a better kibble from the ingredients list. The thing I don't like is that it says poultry fat rather than a specific meat. Theres many types of poultry, that means one bag may be different from another, and if your dog has a sensative GI tract it could cause upset (still better than animal fat though).

Bacteria is actually a concern for the humans, not the dogs. Dogs naturally have salmonella occuring in their digestive tract and because their stomach acid is below 1 on the pH scale the majority of bacteria is killed in the stomach. This is 10 times MORE acidic than the human stomach (approximatly a 2 on the pH scale). Studies show that dogs fed raw have no different digestive tract bacteria levels than a kibble fed dog.

Furthermore, studies done on raw show that raw fed animals always have better teeth than their kibble fed counterparts. Raw bones help naturally scale the teeth and since plaque bacteria (which helps form tarter) feeds off carbohydrates there is less seeing there is a lack of grain in the food.

There is also scientific evidence that dogs do do better on raw diets. I wish I had the specific study, but besides the teeth, it is also better because eating raw protein does not cause insulin spikes like eating a food with grain does. This is ideal for animals prone to diabetes or epilepsy (insulin spikes can often cause seizures). As well it improves circulation because it contains an optimum amount of water and is easier to digest because nutrients are not denatured.

I would never go back to kibble. Although I do not condem it.

Check my list of things (a couple posts above) and compare it to pedigree and iams. You'll find that they are overpriced for the quality. A higher priced dog food in weight actually may cost you less in the long run because you will have to feed much less of it.

Some less expensive (pedigree price range) but better brands of food include Diamond, Acana, Nutro max, and Techni-cal. Foods that are more in the iams price range that are much higher in quality include Nutro Natural Choice, Precise, Eagle, and Techni-cal solutions.
