I just watched the top 10 combat rifles last 6/21/07 11:30 PM PST.
How come the G36 series rifles are not included in the top 10? Aren't they rifles too? In my opinion I think they're much better than the M16 or any M-series rifles in terms of Innovation. The G36 is even the stepping stone of the XM-8 Experimental rifle, the weapon being developed by Heckler & Koch to replace all M-series rifles in the U.S. Armed Forces in the future (2008?).
Probably the show is specifically pertaining to older rifles that has been used in major wars and battles?
The category of Rifles already in service couldn't be the reason because the G36 has been on active service since 1994 and being used by the Bundeswehr (German army), the Spanish military, the GIGN, and some police SWAT Agencies in the U.S.
I suggest next time, when evaluating the best rifles all around the round, don't limit the facts to what the producers' and writers' know... stretch it all over the world.

yeah the g36 series is better than the m16 but it hasn't had as much of an impact on history as the m16. i don't think the steyer aug should be on the list because besides being inovative it has had no effect on history. the xm-8 has been put on hold because by law the joint chiefs have to open the xm-8 competion to more companies and they are waiting for the problems that the xm-8 experienced in the field to be fixed.
If you watch the show, you will notice that they use a "matrix" of factors chosen and voted on by "experts" in ranking their guns and equipment.
They make no secret that often their choices don't represent the current "best available", and especially when they are ranking the "greatest (insert weapon here) of all time" it will almost never be the weapon you are most likely to see on a battlefield today.
Take the best fighter aircraft of all time. Who can deny that the P-54 Mustang is sexy, but airshows are the only place you are likely to see one today - yet it wins the "best of all time" because of how it ranks in the pre-conceived matrix.
The same goes for guns. Sure, I'd like to have an Ak-47 for plinking, but no "modern army" uses them for anything.
