I have to cringe when the voice overs about the war in Europe, mispronounce the name Goebels(Gerbels) and the WWII name for the Nazi nation, the Reich(Reish). For such prestigious organization as the Discovery channel, I find that incredible. The same thing seeems to happen on the History channel.
Hm - I can't recall how they say it on air, but you're not saying it should be "Gerbels", are you? - or is that how they are saying it, in which case, yes, they are a bit off. The German "oe" (the two-letter version of the umlauted "o", ö),is kind of hard to describe to the English-speaking ear...it's about the same as the French "eu", which is so horribly mispronounced in the US ("amateur") as "ure" - WAY off. The nearest I've got to it is to say it as if you were about to throw up - "urh"! The mouth is rounded and the sound is "low-down." Anyone got a better description?
While we're at it, when did the US start pronouncing Adolf to rhyme with Maydolf? It's a short A, for Pete's sake! But that seems to be a lost cause (this side of the Atlantic).
