Last night I was cleaning around my dorm room, and all of the sudden I noticed a patch on the upper part of my pointer finger had turned paint-like white. It looked exactly like I had gotten white paint on there. I tried to wash it off, scrub it off, even scrape it off with a razor edge, and not a single bit was removed.

I thought maybe I had gotten a chemical on my finger? but that didn't make sense... then I noticed two very small reddish dots in the white area. I fell asleep (after unsuccessful researching) and about three hours later woke up and the white patch was completely gone. The two little dots (look like possible bite marks?) are still there, and there is little or no pain. Maybe a tiny bit if i put pressure on the spot, but barely noticable. Can anyone explain?? I even took a picture when it was white, but it's a little blurry Smile

That sounds like Raynod's Phenomenon.

I was diagnosed with Reynaud's Syndrome, among many others, and can tell you that it doesn't sound like Reynaud's to me.
Reynaud's Syndrome is a condition where the blood vessels in your fingers and toes are constricted, due to cold or smoking, and are very painful (pinching) flares.
Your fingers and toes will normally turn red, blue, purplish-black and then turn white (still very painful).
**I have been told that if you do not take warning from cold temperatures and smoking, patients have a high risk of losing their fingers and toes**

It sounds like you were bit by a common spider.

It must have been a very small one, because bites from small spiders are usually harmless, go away within hours (or days) and don't usually hurt that much unless seriously agitated (like poking it with a needle or something.)

This morning the same thing happened to my husband. And it tingled a bit. We can't figure it out. A spider bite doesn't seem right to me. I know it isn't raynaud's (I have that). I mean, can a spider bite make a paint-like white spot that is a little bit harder than the skin around it with no red spots or irritation?

The exact same thing keeps happening to me! Usually I notice a slight burning/tingling sensation in my finger before seeing it is white. Its as white as paper and looks just like I got paint on it with the way I can still see my slightly raised finger print on top of the white. This all starting happening after I started applying betamethasone dipropionate cream, a powerful glucocorticoid steroid. At first it happened almost every day and lasted for a few hours. Now it happens more like once a week or so and doesn't last as long. One odd thing is that I used other fingers to apply the cream and this has only happened to that one particular spot on my left index finger. I am going to a dermatologist for something else in a few weeks so hopefully he will have an answer for me. Until then, I guess it will just be one of those medical mysteries. Hope its not cancer!

The same exact thing happened to me as Beseminger. I looked up Raynaud's Phenomenom and I definitely do not have the same symptoms.

The first time this happened, I felt a pinch/stinging in my finger and looked down just in time to see a small shite dot on my finger. I immediately began to rub thinking it was just a fluke, the "paint-like" spot began to spread like white out. It stayed for at least 1.5 hours and just like it came it went, very quickly. I was actually at the ER the first time because I was very fearful of what it was. The same exact thing has happened to be at least three more times.

Has anyone heard about what this might be? I am becoming concerned as it is more frequent.

this just happened to me about 10 or 15 mins ago. i decided to look it up and like a few ppl above me, i really havn't found out anything except that other people are experiencing this as well. i felt a slight sting on my finger, i was just using it to move the page down as i was reading a story online. I looked down and my finger tip look like it had paint or white out on it. I tried to wash it off, but it only spread down a little bit. It started at the tip of my middle finger on my right hand and now covers almost the whole tip of that finger. Each finger on either side closest to it has a small patch of white as well. i would really like to find someone out about it but have only found this page.

The exact thing you all describe happened to me about a month ago as I was watching TV. I felt the tingling sensation, slight burning on my fingertip, but didn't think anything of it, until I looked at my finger and it started to turn white like it had white out. It spread a bit right before my eyes. I called my insurance's 24-hr hotline and spoke with a nurse, but I didn't get much of an answer, except that perhaps I had poor circulation. That would NOT have been the case, I know what poor circulation looks like, and it's not like white paint. The white faded about 45 minutes later and it hasn't happened since. It's quite troubling not to know what triggered that reaction. I've looked for these key words/symptoms all over the internet, but this is the only forum where I have found anything like this. Has anyone received any diagnosis for this?

This may not be the catalyst for everyone, but the same thing happened to me. I was watching TV and all of a sudden I felt a stinging sensation on my finger and thumb. When I looked down, I saw these white patches as if I had stuck my fingers in white out. After washing proved totally useless, it occurred to me that I had just applied Crest Whitestrips! Apparently, the hydrogen peroxide in the strips caused the adverse effect on my fingers. Hope this helps!

I too noticed a small white patch around my nail on my right pointer finger. I'm really bothered by it. Yes it is tingling and just an odd feeling. If anyone finds out what this could be please let us know. This is pretty weird if you ask me.

The power of the internet never ceases to amaze me. This very strange phenomena just happened to me as well so I googled "sudden burning pain and my skin turned white" and viola....here I am. I've read thru the posts and the reply from one of the members about crest white strips and hydrogen peroxide struck a cord with me because I had recently applied hydrogen peroxide on a cut my son had just gotten. The sudden pain and skin turning white didn't happen right when I was putting the peroxide on his cut, but a few minutes later, so initially I didn't connect the two until I read this post. I frequently use peroxide and have never had this reaction so I am still puzzled by why my skin had this reaction and why only in those two spots - the palm of my hand and the tip of the pinky finger on the same hand. The pain subsided in about 10-15 minutes and the white spots were gone in 45 minutes.

Well, sorry to be redundant but this exact same thing just happened to me. I think you are onto something with the hydrogen peroxide. I was watching tv and my fingers started tingling. I looked down to see what looked like tiny splashes of white-out on three fingertips and also on my left palm. I went to the sink and washed my hands with hot water and soap but it looked the same. I took the rough side of a scouring sponge and tried to remove them with no luck. I did an internet search and after reading this page I realized I too had used peroxide just a few minutes earlier. However, I don't think it touched those areas that were affected. The spots only lasted about ten minutes but it was disturbing! Thank you everyone.

Raynod's Phenomenon.

Hello everyone...like everyone here...i experienced the same symptoms and its effects.
I was washing the dishes when the glass cup i was scrubbing simply broke leaving a deep cut on my hand....i ran to the bathroom to wash the blood and put some hydrogen peroxide and then i put a band-aid....hours later i removed it and applied some more hydrogen peroxide. A few seconds after application, i felt this burning, hot sensation right on top of the wound on the pinky finger. Like a minute or less after, i felt the same sensation on the finger to its left, leaving the same white-looking thing. I conclude it was the hydrogen peroxide. Can that thing go bad? Anywho, i hope is nothing serious.

so today i had the same thing happen to me and the peroxide was what did it. It turned white almost instantly after but didnt burn. while at work earlier i was cleaning with a degreasing agent which im sure burnt and stuck to my skin and when i used peroxide on a cut on my thumb, it turned the parts that were sore from the chemicals. so dishes and cleaning a dorm could definately get some degreasing or other chemicals under a couple layers of skin. thus having the peroxide trying to fight it off as an infection in the body.

it's happened to me several times over the years when using peroxide. look at the picture in this link; if your fingers look like this then it's the peroxide or something containing peroxide in it's ingredients. scroll to towards the bottom of page and look at the picture on the right

The same thing just happened to me. I was terrified because I did not know what was happening, but it itched like hell. I was in the supermarket shopping then suddenly I felt this stinging itch and looked down to see what looked like white paint on the side of my hand. I went to the restroom and tried washing it off with no success, tried rubbing it but nothing worked. About 45 mins. later I noticed that it was starting to fade. I now appreciate the benefits of information sharing because after reading these post I remembered that about 5-10 mins before I felt the itch I had just picked up a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and placed it in my cart. My mind is now at ease. Thanks.

Gosh...LOVE Google!

I noticed my paint spot when I went to get my kids out of the bath. After reading through the first few post and FREAKING OUT!!!! Literally, I came down to the Hydrogen Peroxide.

Let me just say, that I haven't used any of that stuff in years, but what I did use was Clorox 2. I just started a load of whites. I'm wondering if maybe there is something in there that did it? The pinching and burning isn't quite as bad as it was when I first noticed it, but like everyone before me, it was the initial pinch that made me look down. I'll give it a few more hours and see what happens. If the pain doesn't stop, I'll probably head to the doctors Frown

Okay just real quick... I just went and read the contents of the Clorox 2, and it does in fact have hydrogen peroxide. Mystery solved! Thanks everyone!!!

WOW I just googled this issue and this site came up...Well last night around 8pm I was hanging earrings and a necklace on an oak wooden ear ring tree and the skin on left middle finger tip suddenly began itching, tingling, hurting slightly like an ant sting but sensation went away immediatly. Finger tip was beginning to turn white then within a few minutes it looked like I had smeared "white out" from top finger tip down to first knuckle, I washed w/ antibacterial soap to no avail...the only other thing I'd just done was take a few glass bottles and tissue out of bedroom trash and stuff in plastic bag...my 2 young nieces were handling the jewelry but nothing happened to them...with in the hour the discoloration was gone....Wierd

Oh so glad I googled and found this forum!

The same incident happened to me with my fingers, and then I seen someone say something about hydrogen peroxide, and had a lightbulb moment. So thanks for easing my mind!

This happened to me just this morning. Scared me to death. I went to the store to get my husband some hydrogen peroxide and only picked up the bottle and payed for it. I took it home which is about three blocks away and as I was leaving the house I felt what I thought was a sliver in the side of my hand. I started rubbing it in my pant leg and it got worse so I pulled over to look at it and I had white patches that were hard and dry. The prickly sensation lasted about 30 minutes but was only intense for about 5 minutes. Wierd as I have always used this product and have never had this reaction.

Same thing just happened to me this afternoon--white spots like paint or white out on the tips of several fingers with irritation. I can't think of anything I touched that would have hydrogen peroxide on it. Any other ideas?

So like everyone else who posted here, I found this on Google!!

I just moved into an apartment today. My mom bought me a ton of stuff, (cleaning supplies) and I handled an unopened bottle of peroxide and put it in my drawer. About 20 minutes later I'm feeling a weird itch on my thumb and I see a paint spot. I tried washing it off, scrubbing it, picking it, but it didn't come off like paint. Anyway, not sure how this happened, but I'm glad I understand now. I don't know why an unopened bottle would do it to me, but I'm hoping it'll go away.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I just had this happen to me while eating lunch with my husband and daughter. I looked down and saw my thumb looked like it had paint all over it. There was no tingling, no pain, etc. I started scrubbing and picking at it, washed my hands, and realized my skin had turned ghost white in 2 spots. I freaked out, and as my husband was inspecting it trying to calm me down another spot suddenly appeared on my other thumb. We watched it develop.

I had not handled any cleaning products or peroxide beforehand, so I'm not sure what caused it. It does seem like a chemical reaction of some sort, and I do have sensitive skin. I did touch stickers my daughter was playing with, and I have to wonder if the glue on the stickers caused the reaction. The spots have all reduced to very small dots, but there is a warmth in both of my thumbs now.

This just happened to me about 45 minutes ago. I suspected the Hydrogen Peroxide because I had just picked up a sealed bottle and placed it in a cabinet when I felt a pinch and looked at my hand to see a white splotch. The white splotch spread as I looked at it and I rushed to wash my hands which didn't help. I'm so happy I found this forum because I was beginning to panic. Thankfully, the patch is now fading. Strange that a new and sealed bottle of peroxide could do this. Earlier in the evening I discarded an old VHS tape and I pulled the tape to tear it. The white patch appeared where the tape touched my hand. Not sure if there is a connection though.

I'm not going crazy! I'm so grateful for this forum. This has happened to me maybe twice before but I never did anything about it - just got freaked out. This time I actually looked it up. Everyone is mentioning hydrogen peroxide, but I was simply taking out my contacts when this happened just now. Looking at the ingredients in my contact solution didn't say much. BUT, there was a different bottle of specialized solution that was 3% hydrogen peroxide in the same drawer. If a few drops spread onto my regular solution bottle, would that be enough to cause this reaction?

Oh thank goodness for this forum!

Last night I had come home from tanning and decided to start cleaning out my fridge. After about 5 minutes of throwing out old items I felt a sharp "sting / tingle" around the nail bed of my index finger, looked down but did not see anything so continued cleaning. It continued to burn, like when you get lime juice in a cut and then all of a sudden I noticed white splotches on the tips of some fingers that looked exactly like whiteout. It then seemed as though it was spreading and I started getting extremely worried. I tried washing my hands, scrubbing my hands etc but nothing was happening, the white remained. I was so worried at this point that I was going to go to the ER. After my girlfriend calmed me down by suggestion that it must have just been a reaction to something in the fridge (I thought to myself "What on earth in my fridge of all places could cause that kind of reaction?!"). After maybe a half an hour I looked down and the whiteout splitches seemed to be less, and about another hour after that they completely disappeared. This morning however, if I apply pressure to my fingers where the whiteout splotches were, it hurts and is uncomfortable.

After reading this forum I thought back to if I had come into contact with any Hydrogen Peroxide. . . It just so happens that there is H.Peroxide in my teeth whitener that I applied when I was tanning, how it got onto my fingers I have no idea, I know I washed my hands after tanning as well so I am completely foxed.

After reading this forum my mind is put at ease . . . a little . . . If anyone can come up with any other explanation that would be great!

Maybe I'll be able to go back to sleep after reading all this. Woke up about 2:30am needing to go to the bathroom. When I got back In bed, the tip of my left middle finger was burning as though it had dozens of paper cuts in a concentrated area. When I turned the light on, the tip of that finger and part of my ring finger looked like they had been dipped in a dull white paint.

I tried washing it off with soap and hot water to no avail. Finally I remembered using hydrogen peroxide to clean out the humidifier earlier tonight. It's possible some of it spilled on the countertop and I put my fingers in the spill as I left the bathroom. Still, it's weird to have it come up that quickly. I'm wondering if the hydrogen peroxide mixed with the residue of some other bathroom cleaner I had used at an earlier date.

Thinking it might not be water soluble, I went into the kitchen and got grapeseed oil to pour over it. That didn't clear it up completely, but it did seem to help some.

I just had the same thing happen and thanks to a quick peruse of this site I realized what it was (for me). I wear contacts and I use Clear Care solution which is hydrogen peroxide. I noticed when I put the contacts in this morning, despite soaking for the normal time, they stung just a bit, which happens when the solution hasn't deactivated yet. I too noticed a little pinch and then white skin. I had gotten some of the solution on my hands and, voila. Spots. I'd bet a lot of you have had a reaction to the peroxide. Doesn't do it to me all the time, but if I've done a lot of dishes or cleaning the day before, it sometimes happens, doesn't last too long and thankfully it's nothing serious! Hope that helps someone. Smile

So like everyone else I felt a burning pinch sensation on my pinky finger searched all over Google and webmd and found nothing then somehow I stumbled onto this forum and feel relieved as I was headed to the ER. I'm still concerned because I felt the pinch and burn before I used the peroxide. I applied the peroxide after I felt the pinch/burn and it seemed like I had several paper-cuts. my finger had white paint patches after the peroxide. I do use contacts and I checked the ingredients, and I don't see peroxide listed in the solution.

WHAT A RELIEF!!!!
I was getting ready to go to the ER, I am glad I found this forum first.
I had just put my mouthguard in and I was laying down for a nap.
Suddenly I felt tingling like tiny little pin pricks in my left fingers.
I thought it might be a heart attack!
I quickly grabbed for the asperins and noticed the skin on my thumb turning white.
All sorts of crazy things were goiing through my mind.....isn't there some flesh eating disease that causes amputations!!!!!!
I was freaking out, my heart was racing, if it wasn't a heart attack, I might have gave myself one in the panic : )
Thankfully I found this forum, and saved myself a trip to to the emergency room.
Besides the waiting for hours, I don't have insurance, and don't need the huge bill.
I DID come in contact with peroxide, as I soak my mouth piece in peroxide every day.
I have been doing this for years, and have never had this reaction before.
I wonder what could have caused it? Maybe a small cut in my hand I didn't know about?
It is on both my thumb and first finger, as of writing this the thumb has finally started to fade, but the finger is still bright white.

Hi everyone, I know this is an old forum but if anyone has any information with this sudden white- paint like in fingers/ hands w/ a burning and thingly sensation, pls let me know. It's quite painful, feel like sharp needles. Just like the rest, I tried to wash it off, scrub it off and nothing. It did disappear on its own after an hour but it bothers me that I can't find any info online other than the fact that other people have experienced it as well. Any help pls!!!
