Ever wondered why we keep laughing in the Netherlands every time the American's say we're the first nation to go under if the polar ice-caps melt? Well, this may be something for REALLY BIG THINGS or BUILD IT BIGGER. Officially started in 1950's, this is what they now want to have in New Orleans. The last sections were added in 1997, making this one of the largest engineering features in the world which surround our whole nation and if wanted, we close ourselves off from the sea all together.
Then after the great flood in the 1950, they build one section after the other. But soon they realized that the nature had suffered severely from the lack of sault water if there was no proper exchange with the tides.
By now everything in the south was now closed. Only several harbours in the middle of the country weren't. This included the largest harbor in the world: Rotterdam. With literally hundreds of ships every single day and millions of tonnes of cargo, they could not build a dam in the river mouth like they did in the south. They decided to make doors which would span the whole width. Think of it as 2 eiffel towers on it's side. http://www.verenigingmaartentromp.nl/kering.jpg
The things you saw are some of the more impressive features of the literally dozens scattering the country. It's a real maze of constructions.
I hope you enjoyed the pictures and read and I hope someone from Discovery Channel will pick up on this for a show.
I've got my connections here as I'm a TV & Film maker from the industry. Kind regards, Silvio Schelling
...and guess who's building The Palm and the World Project in Dubai? Yes, correct, the Dutch But I doubt it's actually bigger than the Delta Project, even though it's got hundreds of islands.
