you can do both. ifu wanted to go big in showing, i would get used to the whole thing by doing hunters and then the eq because the eq tends to be very complicated, and it rly tests ur skills as a rider
personaly, i think that you should start with equitation. True, it can be very difficult, but it will teach you finnese that can be used in all aspects of riding. Many top jumpers like brianne started off with equitation because it teaches you to really ride instead of just point and shoot to the jumps. Also, many female jockeys learn equitation before racing to learn how to have better control over the horses without using sheer muscle. the girls are not as strong as the male jockeys so they find better ways to control their mounts. All I can say is if you really want to learn how to ride, start with basic equtation at least before you do childrens hunters.
Don't forget that hunters are judged on your horse, so if your horse doesn't have good style over fences or if he is a so-so mover than you won't be competitive in the hunters where you might be in the eq. You can always work on your position and form, but you are limited in how much you can correct about how your horse moves and jumps. I always appreciated the eq more becuase $50,000.00 can buy you a ribbon in the hunters (via a fabulous horse) but it can't buy good equitation!
